Colorado is a horse lovers dream, western style, not KY thoroughbred style. Lots of rodeo here. See older threads for info:

- Equestrian Neighborhood Question

We're in COL SGPS. Our sub-div backs up to Kettle Creek Ranch, a boarding operation claiming 90 head on-site. It's possible to rent an apartment nearby for $800 and board a horse at KCR.

I've heard that Steamboat is very expensive, as are all the mountain ski areas and you may be priced out of that rental market. IMO, ski areas are fairly severe climates for horses, very cold with lots of snow. Work in those areas is not easy to find, usually service jobs.

Use our Search tool with keywords like Steamboat or horses or rodeo to find lots of info posted by others.

Horses seem to be everywhere, $800 rents aren't. First find a place you want to live for $800. Once you are there, you probably won't have to drive more than a couple of miles to get to horses.

$800 will get you very little, if anything, in Steamboat. How close do you need to be to there? I would suggest looking around Craig (though rentals there are tough these days because of the coalbed methane drilling activity). You also might want to look up around Laramie, Wyoming. Lots of horses and rodeo up that way, with the side benefit of the University of Wyoming (an ag college) there. Rents, while not cheap, would be way lower than Steamboat.

Hmmm... there are really only two places in CA that I think would fit you're description. One is down in the Imperial Valley. Would that happen to be the area you are from?

Kremmling Colorado is near Steamboat and big time rodeo and horse country.
Rent is way more affordable there however work is hard to come by depending on what trade you do.
You may consider searching and writing some of the local stables for jobs in the dude string business or pack services with horses such as C Lazy U Ranch in Grand county or Bar Lazy J in Parshall, and Sombero Stables in Grand Lake. They offer housing for their employees and that puts you to work with horses and into people that can help guide you towards your future with horses here.
Yes winters are long and hard here, but I own two horses and as long as they are fed well and kept in water they winter just fine. My only complaint is not a long enough riding season, but it's worth it to disappear into these mountains with my dogs and be in my own living post card. I highly recommmend it myself

Living in Steamboat on $800 is nearly impossible. Add in the stable rent, not doable.

Right about that COflower, but as I stated they may be able to get into something to do with pack string operations or dude string operations that offer housing as well as allow you to keep your own horse there as well.
Steamboat is expensive but you can get into some of the outskirts and find some decent prices in the smaller surrounding towns. There's also ranches that put up help for hay season and general ranch work that they may be able to look into.
Start searching the net on jobs and rentals up that way with the help of net maps and see what you can find. If there's a will there's a way.
