Nice! Brevity is golden and this nails it on the head. I'm a rural Coloradan that now lives in metro and I've never understood the animosity toward those that aren't native to the state. When I drive over Tenderfoot Hill and drop into Cripple Creek I can't understand why everyone doesn't live here. I don't want that but those that appreciate it and the lifestyle of Colorado are always welcome here, in my opinion. I've felt that about rural and urban Colorado and the appeal of this state and the new people it brings in are one of it's best aspects. Diversity is a good thing!
The only thing I dislike about Colorado is the fact I DO take half my pay in scenery. But it's worth it and I compare it to the mining days when miners were often paid in scrip. Only better. :-)

I think this is probably true of any state that has significant rural and urban populations.
It is true that states elsewhere suffer the same problem, especially if they have a metropolitan area big enough to essentially dominate the politics of the state. That said, there are some moderating circumstances that can be present. A very significant one is if agriculture is still a major or dominant industry in the state. In those places, the metropolitan majorities tend to be tempered some in their neglect of the rural areas because much of the metro areas' economies depend on the vitality of agriculture for their survival. States like Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, Minnesota--just to name a few--fit in that category. Colorado used to be in that category, but development and water grabs by the metro areas have seriously damaged agriculture in Colorado and that, along with the population growth on the Front Range, has very much diminished rural political influence in Colorado. Ultimately, that is going to be very bad for Colorado economically--metro and rural--but most of the metro residents can't or don't want to recognize that. The rural residents have pretty much been told by what has happened to them politically in the last number of years that they either need to just "suck it up and take one for the team" or leave. I left. That I DO hate about Colorado.

I grew up in the Springs and Manitou, and went to college in Boulder and Denver. I had a blast in all those towns and have fond memories of them to this very day.
But I pretty much out grew the Front Range 30 plus years ago and have no interest in living there now, because it has certainly outgrown ME with its burgeoning urban centers and in the case of Colorado Springs, influx of people with a belief system I have no interest in. I haven't been back to the Front Range for almost 10 years, and other than occasional curiosity about what my hometown is like now after two massive fires, etc, I don't miss it.
Despite the fact that the urban corridor is probably going to steal what little of our water remains here in Western Colorado and despite the fact that rural Colorado gets trampled all over by Denver, I don't "hate" anybody from the big city. We need a more intelligent understanding of the land and the environment. I get upset when I see how oblivious so many are to the serious challenges - especially water and climate change - that we are facing in Colorado and the rest of the West.
Alas, most urban dwellers aren't interested in what I and many other rural Coloradoans are interested in and deeply concerned about. But this does have its advantages. I need lots and lots of breathing room and the solace of empty spaces which does not exist on the Front Range. If you have a sense of place, you can still find where the wild things are on the Western Slope. An urban dweller may wish to visit "where the wild things are," but few want to LIVE there and I'm glad of this because that means I can still go to places where I will see no one for weeks or even months. Gary Snyder put it best in his "Cold Mountain" poems.
Men ask the way to Cold Mountain
Cold Mountain: there's no through trail.
In summer, ice doesn't melt.
The rising sun blurs in swirling fog.
How did I make it?
My heart's not the same as yours.
If your heart was like mine,
You'd get it and be right here.
Pax Denver.

Democracy requires minority rights equally as it does majority rule. The minority's rights must be protected no matter how singular or alienated that minority is from the majority society; otherwise, the majority's rights lose their meaning. In the United States, basic individual liberties are protected through the Bill of Rights, which were drafted by James Madison and adopted in the form of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. These enumerate the rights that may not be violated by the government, safeguarding—in theory, at least—the rights of any minority against majority tyranny. Today, these rights are considered the essential element of any liberal democracy.

Likes/Dislikes from Native Coloradan
Born / Raised in CO - DenMetro. Lived here most of my life in CO minus decade+ on west coast.
Likes:
1. Up n coming public transpo system. Good on RTD for being proactive with light rail.
2. Political scene that's evolving away from hard-core right wingism. I'm not a hippie / commie, but I grew up in Metro Denver and experienced so much right-wing nastiness growing up that I'm glad it's (slowly) changing.
3. Fairly decent public schools (but that's not a 100% endorsement - a lot of it still sucks).
4. Restaurants are improving.
5. Nightlife scene is improving.
6. Beautiful mountains.
7. Biking / path access everywhere. Good trails.
8. CDOT does a very good job of staying on top of potholes and snow compared to most cities in the US.
9. Great public parks.
10. Shopping is improving.
11. Skiing / Telluride / Durango and other awesome towns to hang out in.
12. Decent museums and concerts. Red Rocks remains one of the most awesome venues in the world.
13. Emphasis on being healthy, active.
14. Love of dogs / pets and acceptance among populace.
15. Decent proximity drive-wise to whatever you need (I LOVE how people on this board complain about traffic / driving - they've obviously never lived in a REAL big city where TWO HOURS is AT LEAST the norm each way!)
Dislikes / Hates:
1. All the guntard/huntard/2nd amendment idiots. Really Coloradans? After Columbine and Aurora, we're still GOING THERE???
2. Absurdly overpriced housing in areas that don't deserve the cost structure.
3. Extremely poor public services compared to many major metro areas in the US.
4. Mean / nasty / inconsiderate / aggressive / UNSKILLED and sometimes potentially violent drivers. It's amazing how many times I've been shown the "I have a gun" sign with someone's hand after a percieved road "slighting". Again, see point #1.
5. In-your-face unashamed racism. Not kidding. Shame on you CO.
6. Distinct lack of culture / insistence among populace and media that "Denver / Front Range is SO cultured" when it absolutely is not.
7. This is getting better, but the absolute dominance of chain restaurants and lack of true restauranteurs is still astounding.
8. Bumpkin' mentality about so many things. Denver is STILL a cowtown. Sorry.
9. Unapologetic right wing Christian religiosity constantly everywhere. Ugh!
10. Stoner potheads and way-too-left hippie types (especially Boulder). NOT a fan of the new pot law.
11. BOULDER drivers (WTF?!?!?!)
12. Ridiculously low salaries (like 1/3 in some professions, compared to the Coasts).
13. Dirt bikers that tear up the beautiful mountains.
14. The horrible hot dry summers / radical temp swings overall (I don't mind winter that much nor do I think they're so bad in CO).
15. In-your-face right-wingers who just assume you think the way they do / spout their crap constantly.
16. Ignorant people seem to be the rule rather than the exception.
17. General lack of things to do. Probably an unfair comparison, but after living in SF, LA and spending a lot of time in NYC, this contrast is unavoidable.
18. People's lives and public policy revolving around the Broncos.

Assuming that was in reference to frankykrueger's above post, it looked to me like he was just replying to the topic, rather than complaining be being bitter. I like to read people's dislikes (or even their hates) when they're balanced out with likes. All of one or the other just reads like that person isn't discerning. It did read like we wasn't seeing some of the issues that clearly, but his opinion is as valid as anyone's whether I agree or not.

We've spent around 3 years off and on here and are debating whether or not to move out of state. So. Observations from a transplant. Maybe it says more about us than the state but it is what it is.
We dislike politics and it's very in our face here. I don't care for either party but thanks for asking if you could put 19 signs in my yard. It's all a battle for money and control at the behest of floppy phallus syndrome. Colorado needs more well endowed confident leaders who are able to live in modest homes and drive used cars they know how to fix. But this isn't colorado it's Murika.
We dislike HOAs and such. We came from an area that had few and lack experience to compare to. So again maybe not colorado specific but it's something we dislike here.
We dislike the school experience we've had with our children. They bring home ads on a regular basis masquerading as information. Ads for skate parks and private schools and chic fil a cows handing out coupons on school grounds, flyers stapled to lunch menus etc etc. Our daughters teacher is excellent but has health issues and is treated very poorly by her employer from our perspective. There is little the school can offer. An indictment of Big Education to be sure but again living in Colorado brought it to us. To come to terms with one school district begging on the corner for change while another district lights money on fire to keep their ipads and 300 dollar tball uniforms for 8 year olds.
We don't like the traffic and poor roads. Please paint some lines for lanes. It's hard to see them at night.
The mountains are pretty for looking at and fun to explore. Certain places are a country themselves it seems. We really really like the people of the western slope and the eastern plains.
We also enjoy the fishing though I was accosted by some random tree hugger who materialized from the pines to verify I was releasing my trout.
We like what we probably gathered was the old colorado. We came to find it and enjoy what remains if anything ever was. Our plan has changed and always will but for now we're about to embark on a low budget full time motorhome escapade working and homeschooling and absorbing everything colorado has to offer.
I also enjoy the responsible approach to cannabis and not taking 700 bucks worth of opiates per month as prescribed by the pharmaceutical variety pack quack of the month. It's nice to not feel like criminal. So thank you for that. Sorry for coming to your magnet but we try to treat her well.
