They are both very varied states, and are quite different from each other. The biggest difference is that Colorado is much more urbanized, as Idaho has no truly big cities to speak of. The Boise area is only about as big as Colorado Springs, and it is the hub of Idaho. By way of comparison, Colorado has Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Pueblo, Fort Collins, Greeley, and all of their suburbs, more or less all just along I-25. Even the I-70 corridor isn't really that unpopulated, there isn't that much space between towns/gas/etc.

It's been a long time since I've been to the southern half of Idaho (where Twin Falls is), but the climate is generally more seasonal than Colorado, and generally not as harsh (this statement will exclude Eastern Idaho, as their winters can be long). Mostly plains and desert with a few rivers in the southern half.

I know the Idaho Panhandle from Lewiston northward pretty well (I lived and worked in the area at one time). In my opinion, anywhere from Moscow northward (including Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint) would be more what you're looking for (mountains/outdoors/deer/moose, etc.).

I've learned that the best place you can make a good income is the best place to raise a family. IMO, the ability to earn a good income outpaces the cost of housing. And that is why I am in Colorado and not Idaho.

Twin Falls has been growing pretty well but is still unknown and under-considered by most. Lack of trees will turn off many but if you get a little land with irrigation water it can be pretty and useful for gardening and animals. Hour to get into forest to south, maybe 90 minutes to the north. Weekend access. Decent option to look at. Just crossed the 100k mark for metro population so it is getting more national stores, amenities but still has small town / country roots.
