Ft. Collins, IMO, would be worse, but I'll leave that up to some of the others. I will address Boulder and Denver.
Unlike Columbia, MO, which I have been to, or Champaign, IL where I lived for 7 yrs, Boulder is very interdependent on a big city, in this case, Denver. There are people in Boulder who work in Denver, and vice versa. There are people in all over Boulder County who work in Boulder. There are probably as many people in Boulder working more than 15 min from there jobs as in Denver. There are a lot of people who drive more than 15 min to get to their jobs in Boulder. As I said, it is very interdependent on Denver.
Denver has lots of walkable neighborhoods and plenty of people who take the bus and light rail to their workplaces. You could proably find work downtown and live in one of the residential neighborhoods. One of the big hospitals, University and Children's, just moved to Aurora, but I still think your wife could find work as a PT in Denver. It may be harder in Boulder. There is one hospital in Bldr with three locations. None are very large.
I think you need to do way more research, particularly on the legal job, before you pack up that U-Haul.

Here it is, first hand from an attorney.

Not to mention every time we drive through Denver there seems to be an ample supply of smokestacks/refineries.

I think you are referring to Commerce City. The whole metro area is not like that, for Pete's sake!

As someone who spent a few years in columbia undergrad, and some more in Boulder post grad. Again, Boulder is not columbia. It is in fact between here and reality for so many reasons.
Denver is in fact Columbia, but you seem to have already judged the city based on the highway. So be it I guess. Ever judge Columbia by driving through it on 70? Pretty ****ty huh?
Get where I'm going with this?

I actually did the reverse: I moved from Colorado to Missouri.
Colorado is beautiful and clean. But Missouri is awesome. The people here are amazing. You simply will not find the sort of quality people in Colorado that you find in Missouri.

What part of the bugs, humidity, dreariness, freezing sunless winters, and depressing weather do you like the most?

The part where people are far more concerned about the size of their neighbor's heart and soul than they are about the size of their neighbor's SUV, recycling bin, latte, ski rack, or house.

You just listed the exact same things that give me the jitters about the SoCal infiltration of Denver. I could play the "20 years ago it was like -this-" card but we all know every city changes over time. I also have a affinity for the genuineness and neighborliness of the people in MO. Really I think that's the midwest in general.

I myself live in Missouri, used to live in Wyoming, have relatives in Colorado (am familiar with the general area), and perfer that area over Missouri, but that comment is the most narrow-minded thing I've ever heard. If the above poster prefers Missouri, who cares? What's the point of attacking him? All you're doing is proving the point he was trying to make.

"They" were talking like this when we came here almost 30 yrs ago. I'm tired of hearing about the SoCal "infiltration" or any other "infiltration". It seems there is a history of blaming everything on the outsiders.
