Even with new construction you have to beware. We rented a SFH for six months while our retirement home was being built. The rental was built by a low-price, mass production, nationally known builder - a basic home with no amenities, crawl space but no basement. I looked down in the air ducts and they were full of construction debris, sawdust, wallboard pieces and lots of wallboard mud dust. I believe the latter is a carcinogen....

Coming from an HVAC tech like myself, that is the oldest trick in the book. Everybody on the job site just sweeps the construction debris in the ductwork.

Fair is fair. Not everybody, either native or transplant, finds themselves enamored with today's Colorado, so, I thought I'd start this thread for those people to tell everyone (including the people so starstruck with the state) why they want to leave.

TELL IT LIKE IT IS

1) Current Colorado locale: Georgetown

2) Why do you want to leave?: The list is long: Too dry, sinus problems, too much sunshine (I know it sounds odd, but it is true), too brown, too many tourists, not enough of a growing season, bad schools, too much traffic on I-70, I hate skiing, I hate mining history, high cost of living, foothills and mt communities are turning into ant farms, no good thunder and lightning storms, and the list goes on and on.

3) Where outside of Colorado and why: New England: Green, equal seasons, I can grow a garden, good schools, I can afford a beautiful home with some history, rich history, friendly reserved people, close to NYC and Boston, diversity, the ocean, beautiful fall colors, great storms, no sinus problems, and the list goes on and on.

4) 2nd and 3rd Place Choices: Washington State or Ireland

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving?: Job and sale of home

6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? If you have never had sinus issues in your life, prepare to have them upon arrival in CO.

I have no problem with this thread. Colorado is not a perfect place by any means, so it doesn't hurt to point out the negatives, too.

I, too, wonder if part of the motivation of putting this thread up was to do something to discourage newcomers from coming. But I do understand the sentiment. Too much growth too quickly is a curse and not a blessing. I'm all for the freedom of Americans to live where they want to live, but not everyone can live here.

2) Why do you want to leave?: I don't, really...but my girlfriend lives far away, in a nice place...and given the direction CO is headed, maybe it's time to think about a change after 36yrs here...

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving?: the obvious...the economy, selling my house in a down market, relocating my job, and most importantly - leaving my aging parents, good friends, and a great lifestyle here....it's a BIG decision

6) Anything else you want to tell us that we dont know? Despite the 'chamber of commerce' spin on Colorado, this State is headed for some challenging times...as is the entire country.

i empathize with most of this. i think the brownish/yellowish desolation of the denver area is the big kicker for me, having grown up under huge canopies of big, bushy trees. though i would probably move to the southeast over new england. i don't really like cold weather. i also miss the beach and the myriad lakes and rivers. and the thunderstorms, of course.

1) Current Colorado locale: Was Fort Collins for 10 years, moved to Upstate NY last May

2) Why do you want to leave?: Left to be closer to wife's family, sick of the dry climate, forests nearby are rather scrubby, the plains in Colorado are rather barren, crazy growth

3) Where outside of Colorado and why: Saratoga Springs, NY area. Wife's family lives in the Adirondacks, on a lake which sucked me in. Fell in love with the climate and terrain.

4) 2nd and 3rd Place Choices: Somewhere in the northwest, Nebraska (where I'm from and I have family there)

5) What’s currently holding you back from moving?: Fort Collins' downtown, beer culture, mountains, friends

6) Anything else you want to tell us that we dont know?

Where: 4th generation native (Denver; Arvada for last 30 years)

Why: Climate, Climate, Climate--our weather is so overrated. I read that we have 300 days of sunshine--does that mean if the sun peeks out it's considered a sunny day? Hate the wind and hate the long winters. Sick of seeing all the dirt all winter long. Tired of all the cateriing to the skiiers.

Where to: Arizona --now that's sunshine. I know there are bad parts, however, the majority is very clean and pretty. You truly can be active all year long. When it's 115, you just wait until the sun sets to take your walks, bike rides, etc. People are much friendlier.

Second & Third: Boise, Idaho (although winter would keep me away). Possible the warmer parts of New Mexico.

Holding Me Back: Fear of failure, worried we won't find jobs. We would like to do this in the worst way, but I can't seem to overcome the fear of the unknown.

One more thing, about allergies, I believe the mag. chloride could be contributing to all the problems out there. Let me know what you think.
