Anyone know anything about the Rye area? It would be for retirement. It looks like a nice place but I want to know about the crime, drug problems, growing veggies, etc.

Thanks

Rye, Colorado.

I went to High School there and worked in Colorado City for almost 8 years recently. My folks moved from Colorado City, just about a few miles down 165 from Rye, just off of exits 71 and 74 on I-25, to near me in Pueblo West.

I have numerous threads on Rye here. Let me whip a few of them out for you and you can browse a bit.

Long answer: reported property crime rate per capita in Rye is well above national average but this could be deceiving. Crime tends to occur in town over the neighboring rural area. If the town is small relative to the rural housing base, it can make the city crime look high. If you could blend the city and neighborhoring rural areas together it usually moves back to average. Often you can look at the county or metro area crime but here that would be mixing with Pueblo and may not be that accurate to do so. Violent crime is not as elevated and may in fact be below average if you go to the broader region again. All that said, if you live in town it might be higher than you expected per capita. Drugs are everywhere. I dunno if it worse than average but folks looking for it will find it. You can often avoid immediate neighbors issues but the issue to some degree will usually be a few blocks / miles away most places.

Rye gets much more precipitation than most places in CO but the frost free growing season is still pretty short. Greenhouse use would help or growing from starter plants instead of seeds may be wise.

Rye is probably a pretty good choice if you can handle the fairly heavy winter snow, limited local services and driving to Pueblo for some stuff. The nearby scenery (as shown in McGowdog's photos) to real estate price ratio is quite favorable for CO. Based on late recognition of your name and what you said in your Westcliffe thread, I think you could make Rye work for rural living with comparatively better access to desired basic services and city options than Westcliffe.

Rye is a very small town, they have a flashing 4-way stop light, the high school 9-12 is about 270, don't think crime is a huge deal there from my experience.

Here's a local newspaper;
