Major Realtor Site
Since it seems taboo to post URL, the major Realtor site on the Net shows that Fort Collins has a lot of houses under $150,000!?!?!?! That is dirt cheap. Even Boulder where there is talk of extreme cost has a lot of homes around $300,000. Once again, not bad at all. ALthough, $300,000 would be out of my teacher salary price range, but school admin with wife working could swing it.
How reliable do those numbers sound?

in the Denver metro area www.recolorado.com is the public side of our MLS system.
It is very possible to buy a place in that area for that price. If you are handy, you may wish to look at HUD homes and "The Teacher Next Door" Program.

In northern Colorado, you can visit www.col.property.com (broken link), which receives our MLS uploads on a nightly basis. For $150K and less, the majority of properties will be townhomes and condo. Most houses in that price range will be old and in most cases, will need some TLC.
You can get some nice homes (new and existing) between $20K-$300K in either Ft. Collins or Loveland.
Starting teacher salaries in Loveland (Thompson R-2J) are around $30K, a little more for experience and those with Masters. Ft. Collins (Poudre R1) is a little higher.

Ouch, that low? I knew it was low. I am on the 1st year pay scale in my district in CA and I make $50K with a $2K bump every year the first several years and $94K at 26 years. I knew CO was low, but ****. However, I see that you do have homes as part of this "teacher next door program", which we don't have here. That could be the difference maker.

Yeah, that low. Sucks doesn't it? My wife has taught for over 20 years, and my oldest daughter just began teaching at a private school, which even pays worse than the public schools! I know of a gal that got her masters and she started out in the mid $30's. Wages top out at $55,833 for non-master, $69,751 for masters, and $73,744 for doctorates.
Here is the url to view the salary schedule for the Ft. Collins area:
http://www.psdschools.org/documentlibrary/downloads/Human_Resources/Salary_Schedules/Certified_Teacher_Salary_Schedule_T.pdf (broken link)
Best of luck.
