If you are still looking ( and reading!) Crestone is very close as far as the atmosphere you are looking for. Also a charter school. I lived there for three years. Salida is wonderful- one of the two nearest big "cities" to Cresotne, and so much fun. The downtown has a very eclectic feel- mostly art galleries, small shops, and lots of fat tire bikes and kayaking. I have heard from locals that Salida is not as liberal as it seems, but I can't say either way, as I have only spent a day there at a time. It has a good tourism economy for those seeking the outdoors, and is very close to Monarch Ski Resort. As far as I know, there is no charter school, but I could be wrong. . . If I could afford to live in Salida I definitely would.

These posts are great! Keep them coming so I can know where not to live!

Some of the old, mountain/mining towns have become kind of hippie enclaves. Ward and Gold Hill come to mind. They are also pretty close to Boulder, so you can get your liberal "fix" there too.

If you want expensive Telluride comes to mind.

Harumph!

Boulder is not small so I eliminate it as nonresponsive.

The list is short: Durango, Trinidad, Pueblo (smaller than it looks), La Junta to some degree, the Delta/Hotchkiss area, and Telluride. Probably also Lake county (leadville), Steamboat to some degree, and breckenridge/summit county to some degree.

Salida is nice but is not liberal in my view; it may have a handful of liberals but that's a small handful as it is a small place.

Each small Colorado town has its own personality. You must tour through and visit them and the folks living there to get a sense of which town fits you. It is very interesting! I have lived in SW Colorado for several years now. I prefer my town for numerous reasons, but like all those around me for different reasons.
