Hi there. I'm going to travel from CA to KY next week and was thinking about going the 70 route instead of the 40/44.

How difficult is it driving through there right now? I don't see any heavy snow in the forecast.

How steep are the mountains leading up to Denver? Is it similar to...let's say the Grapevine Pass near Los Angeles? Is it safe?

I live just south of I-70, 20 miles east of the Utah border. Right now the roads are good, a close friend of mine spent several days in Denver and Ft. Collins, just got back a while ago. He told me right now I-70 is fine.

Weather wise, it looks ok for the most part. A small system is coming through the western half of the state Tuesday. then another one a week from today. IMO Vail pass and the Eisenhower are two of the easier passes to travel on in the state. I've been on that road once a month for the past two decades. You should be fine for travel.

And of course, as you're looking at I-70 for travel, you're aware there is a toll section from Topeka to west Kansas City. Been a while since I've been on it, last time it cost $1.65. And then of course, exit off 70 and onto I-64 which takes you to Louisville

Road Conditions, Speeds, Travel Times, Traffic Cameras, Live Streaming Traffic Cameras, Road Closures and Road Work Information provided by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) a branch of Colorado Department of Transportation for road conditions.

The grade on Tejon Pass is similar to Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel approach, but the latter two are both above 10,500' in elevation - more than twice that of Tejon (4,200').

If you're coming through on a Sunday Afternoon I would strongly advise against I-70 because day skiers returning to the Front Range can cause considerable congestion and add 1-2 hours onto your travel time.

Definitely heed this advice. Both Saturday and Sunday afternoon from Vail to Denver can be a mess with HEAVY traffic.

I just made that drive on Friday (relocating from CA to CO) and it wasn't too bad except for some heavy traffic leaving the ski resorts, along with a couple of accidents that blocked lanes. The roads were paved and dry for the most part.

There are areas that the speed limit drops to about 55mph (from 75 near the Utah border!). Me not being familiar with the drive, just kept in the slow lane and passed as needed.

I would compare this drive to I-80 going up to Reno/Tahoe in the winter, the Grapevine at least you have 4 lanes in each direction and rarely is there snow. I think you'll be fine just don't rush it.

Right now, the only problem is the flooding in Missouri, around St Louis.

We drove I 70 from KY to Idaho last August. It was Sunday when we passed through and we saw the eastbound traffic stopped for miles. I sure was glad we were going the other way.

If you schedule permits it, I highly recommend the hot springs in Glenwood. Its a great way to soak away the road wear on the body. The Marriott properties there are nice, a Residence Inn and a Courtyard.

Safe journey to you!

That seems a bit out of the way.
