Hello!

A little about us - were a couple that moved to Missouri from Florida last year and we're on a mission to make it to one of our dream states. We are looking for suggestions of places that would be most suitable for us.

Were not the 'big city' type - a small town would be great! We prefer to have a town that has: a Grocery Store (or Wal Mart/Target), Shell Gas Station & Good Restaurants (with some healthy options) within 10-15mins. As well as a Movie Theater (IMAX would be cool too) and a decent Shopping Center within 30-45mins. Also, we want to explore a lot of the Colorado Scenery - so suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

We have been very passionate and excited for at least a decade+ to move to such a beautiful area! We want to embrace the surroundings - were not as much for the industrialized areas as we are Earth's natural beauty which seems to shine brightly the further we go West!

Looking forward to hearing all the perks and suggestions!
Thank You!

Hard to help you without knowing your budget to buy or rent, plus what sort of work you may need to find.

Well Renting would be optimal at first and I'd say no more than $850-900/mo. I have experience in retail, caregiving and nannying. My boyfriend has experience mostly with Harley Davidson and UPS.

What is the Minimum wage in Colorado?

No more than $850 to $900 a month? Oh my. What part of Colorado are you interested in? Have you visited? You may be in for sticker shock. Anyway, good luck to you.

Are 1 bedroom places really over that? If so I'm shocked! I mean in Florida cost of living is way higher than the pay rate (at least where I was!)

That certainly could fit into any of a large number of places in Colorado, and with your rent number, it certainly won't be anywhere in Ft Collins, Boulder, Denver metro, or Colorado Springs. These are all high population density areas with ever increasing rental prices.

However, the big wildcard in all of this is employment. The bigger places have more and better paying jobs than the smaller places you outlined. Minimum wage here is $8.31 and will be a marginally sustaining way to live in any of our cities. In smaller places, you may have a chance. Overall the cost of living here will be slightly less than Florida, but not by a huge margin.

A big mis-conception with the rocky mtn west over places in the east and even mid-west is that we have a spread out population with a host of small towns within 30-45 minutes of major metropolitan areas. We don't. We have several large population areas, a number of larger towns several hours out from the metro areas, and we have a lot of small, couple hundred person towns with not much around them further out from the metro areas. The smaller places lack for much in the way of work and recreation like you described. The major metro areas are where 75% of the Colorado population works, plays, and lives.

We do have some larger towns that are 100k and under in population that may fit with what you want. Places like Pueblo, Grand Junction, Alamosa. These may be the best places to have lower cost of living and lower rents, but they also may be more difficult to find work in.

Maybe Canon City?

The problem that you'll have is that small towns won't have the jobs you're looking for. I was going to suggest Salida, but I'm not sure if they have HD or UPS.

Maybe Montrose or Delta?

We're not looking into anything too crazy (as far as population and all that.)

Minimum wage in Colorado is still more than in Missouri - I'll have to check into the smaller places and see what their cost of living is vs. the bigger cities. I'll definitely look into the places you suggested! Thank you for your reply.

I'll check into Canon City - even if they don't have Harley Davidson or a UPS we might be able to find a job suitable for him or it might be close enough to something of that nature if not!

Thank you for your reply.

I was going to suggest the mountains until you said what your budget is. Glenwood springs has a Harley dealership but a 1 bedroom will run $1200ish, maybe a little less. UPS has a distribution center in Silverthorne, rents will be higher there but there is a big Outlet Shopping Center there as well as Target and such.

Colorado is pretty expensive, living in the mountains is really expensive but many of us make sacrifices to do so. Visiting is really important, it's a large and diverse state.
