Just saw (and heard) my first hummingbird of the season. I think he was a Broad-tailed which are pretty common in Colorado. We also get Calliope and Black-chinned hummingbirds and the Rufous Hummingbird which comes through in July and August. If you enjoy watching our humming friends, start putting out your feeders now and fill them with a nectar made of one part sugar to four parts water. Let's make our little seasonal guests a good welcome. Will try to get pix and post them, and I'd be interested to find out if the hummers are back in YOUR part of Colorado!

Yes indeed. Saw our first scout on April 11 and put a small feeder out that day (just 1 cup). Had a visitor the following day, then none for a week. The hummingbird express arrived on Monday and we've had a steady stream of them all week.

I am absolutely fascinated watching Hummingbirds. We are at a point of installing a backyard planter. My wife and I would like to plant some sort of deer resistant red or orange foliage to attract the little Hummers. Not sure at this time what, but we'll figure it out as we go.

While you are waiting on your planter, put out a hummingbird feeder in a place that's easy for them to see and attach red ribbons to it. When placing a feeder, consider the "bird's eye view." Place it out in the open where the birds can find it. Flowers in your garden can help to attract hummingbirds. Especially attractive varieties include agastache (hyssop), butterfly bush, salvia, hollyhocks, impatiens, columbine and penstemon. Consider planting a combination of annuals, perennials and vines.

I too am fascinated by hummingbirds. Amazing little creatures, aren't they?
