Hi,

We are considering a few days of camping near Crested Butte in late June. This will be on weekdays, so we won't need to compete with weekend travelers.

We use a tent, and prefer to not listen to generators when we're in the great outdoors. I've read a little bit about dispersed camping in the Kebler Pass area. Can anyone comment on how busy/full it is during the week (probably Mon-Thurs)? And also any places where we would have fewer "neighbors"?

I will probably get a hotel room for one night in CB, then we will have plenty of daylight the next day to scout around for spots, but any pointers to get us started would be helpful.

Thanks...

I can't speak to camping near Kebler Pass (although I have driven over it, and it is quite beautiful, but pretty much everything is up thataway), but for what it's worth, I've camped at three sites going up the Taylor River route and all three were just wonderful. Stayed at a commercial ground near Almont which (at the time, about 20 years ago) wasn't at all overdeveloped but had those nice things like flush toilets and showers. Also stayed at a campground a little farther up on the northside of the Taylor near Spring Creek -- very nice to have the river lullaby you to sleep. Third site was all the way up past Taylor Reservoir, near Pine Creek. If memory serves, I was there kinda early in the summer, not the high season -- remember it being pretty windy but I had it all to myself.

I don't think you can go too wrong around CrustyButt, but others might have more recent experience. Have fun!

*Consider staying at the Hostel in CB during your nite in town.

*Lake Irwin located about 7 miles from downtown, 2 miles off Kebler Pass road is an excellent national forest campground situated on a lake about 10,300 ft elevation. Probably still some snow around in late June. Bring warm clothes for sitting around the campfire. It gets chilly overnight, even in July! Campground scheduled to open on June 15th, though the water system will not be functional.

Directions: Drive west on County Road 12 (Kebler Pass Road) 5 miles to Forest Road 826. Turn right on FDR 826 an drive for 2 miles.

*Another good campground is the O' Be Joyful campground on BLM land.

Directions: From Crested Butte, drive north on Gothic Road toward Mount Crested Butte. At the fork, bear left to continue onto County Road 734. After about three miles, turn left onto BLM Road 3220 and continue about 0.25 miles to the campground.
