I'm sorry, I shouldn't be so opinionated/sp?. You and only YOU know where you need to be.
We've been visiting Cripple Creek by motorhome for the last 12 years. Mostly 6 to 8 weeks at a time. Bought a large house there over a year ago. Spent 6 months there last year and finally moving there next week. We LOVE it and don't mind the travel to get to businesses, etc. To us, its heaven on earth.

Cripple Creek is a summer home for a few people who then get summer tourists, and a winter home for hardly anybody with anything better to do. I knew one person who ended up living there (divorce settlement house) and he was depressed before he ever moved there... probably still there working off the internet--if he has internet.

One plus is the General Store there with great fudge!!
My DH has won 2 royal flushes there!

There is tons of wildlife!! Lots of homes and land for sale too!

I'm glad you are happy. You will be very strong living in that altitude, when you go lower...you'll never run out of energy!!

Cripple Creek is definitely not for everyone. Compared to the east coast, we can't get over how friendly 'mountain' people are in that town. Hubby broke his leg there last fall and back east, people would totally ignore him or walk over him. In CC the residents were OVERLY helpful and couldn't seem to do enough for him. And like I said before, will be much much cheaper living for us. I don't intend on staying in Maryland and doing nothing but paying super high taxes in my old age, not to mention Maryland is just a horrible place to live. I should know - I've lived here 57 years.

I've only been to Victor once and it seemed like a throwback to the old-school mining towns I always read about. It was really cool like I imagine Cripple Creek was before gambling. If you don't mind the isolation, it might be just the place.

There is a story about Victor in today's Sunday Denver Post, and it is NOT pretty. With the huge budget shortfall Colorado is facing this year, Victor is in danger of losing its funding from the states gaming impact program, like ALL of its funding. As columnist Andy Vuong points out, the impact funds have become "the lifeblood of Victor". IMO losing these funds isn't far from just nailing boards to the windows and walking away until the economy improves (whenever THAT will be).

I rarely comment on the economics of this state, but this kind of news is distressing to say the least. It looks to me to be a cutback of basic social services ranging from police and fire protection to road maintenance to Lord knows what other basic services a community like Victor would provide. If Victor loses its money from this key source, if they have any money in a general fund reserve, they will have to draw on that.

That's kind of like a blue collar worker losing his livelihood due to a plant closing with no employment in sight. He draws out what unemployment he can, and then is living off his life savings. Been there, done that.

This article is an eye opener!

Sounds like it has as much going for it as that town in High Plains Drifter.

Ah, yes! The town of Lago, I believe!

According to the article, this situation isn't a done deal, but it doesn't paint a pretty picture.
