I am fairly new to Colorado. Last year, I went to the DMV and registered my car, and got a plates, and the little stick-on decals.

It is now a year later, and they expire in August. Will I get a notice in the mail, or is it up to me to just renew them on my own? In my old state, we got a notice in the mail, and mailed it back in with a check (or did it online).

Thanks for any advice.

You should receive a renewal notice in the mail. I did a few weeks before my renewal month.

You should receive a post card by mail, but in my experience, they don't arrive sometimes. Even if you don't get it, you should be able to renew online.

Does the DMV have your current address ? Many times people move and don't inform the DMV of their new address, so then they don't get the reminder card.

If August is your "grace" month, renew now online. If Sept is your grace month, then wait a little more for the card.

See the FAQs at https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv...n-renewal-faqs

BTW, do you know if you will need a new Emissions inspection, or not ? It is usually every other year. The card will tell you. Some FAQs at https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv/gas-vehicles

The cards usually are mailed well in advance, but maybe they are running late due to heavy inflow of new residents.

Also, mail sometimes gets stolen. I preferred to renew my registration in person and get the stickers directly.

Sometimes they are simply not sent out. For the first two years after my initial registration, I did not receive the notices/cards.

Hint: Don't count on the cards arriving. Be proactive.

The renewal postcards are mailed out at the beginning of the month of expiration. If yours expires at the start of the month, you won't get a postcard weeks in advance. Mine expires on Aug 2, my postcard arrived on Aug 2.
