No doubt you've seen them after a gusty Front Range day, speed limit signs especially. They'll end up being almost parallel to the road.

Are they mounted with U-bolts to a round steel pipe for a reason? I'm guessing that it's better for them to rotate in the wind versus being bolted to a more rigid support, or maybe it's just because that's the way it's always been done. Anyone with inside insights to CDOT standards here?

All road signs are designed to bend, yield or break away in the event of a car impact - this design feature and Colorado's strong winds means that they can twist at times. http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/local_rur...g/fhwasa09025/
