HI there it's me again~!!!!~
I have family in Farmington and would like to bypass the San Juan Mountains on the 550. Can anyone tell me the drive to Moab, UT from Rifle, CO on 211/491 to 160 then get on 550 in Durango to Farmington. I have been through the San Juan Mountain and find it beautiful but I would like to bypass it this time. On mapquest it looks like this route wouldn't be as bad as THROUGH the San Juan's. HELP!!!!!![]() Thanks~!!!~ Last edited by JustmovedtoColorado; 02-28-2008 at 07:16 AM. Reason: spelling |

That is a good "bad weather" alternative route, though it obviously is longer in mileage. It may not be totally snow free in bad weather, though--the area around Monticello (pronounced "Monta-sello," by the way), Utah is well over 7,000 feet elevation. Easier though, to just go to Shiprock on 491, then into Farmington, rather than dealing with Hesperus Hill between Cortez and Durango on 160--it can get nasty in a winter storm.
