Americans express patriotism in many forms, and Colorado was ranked the fifth most patriotic state in America, according to a recent study conducted by the financial website WalletHub.

With the Fourth of July approaching, WalletHub’s team compared 13 indicators of patriotism including military enlistments, volunteer rates and the percentage of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election.

Among the criteria used to determine patriotism were military and civic engagement, the number of citizens who vote in elections, and the number of volunteers for AmeriCorps (AmeriCorps is a nonprofit program that engages adults in public service work).

Civic Engagement: Colorado came in at number 3 for the highest percentage of adults who voted in the 2016 election - 69% of Coloradans voted in that election.

Military Engagement: Colorado ranked 12th in military engagement.

AmeriCorps volunteers: There are about 49 AmeriCorps volunteers per 100,000 adults in Colorado, giving it a ranking of number 7.

All in all, Colorado scored 63 out of 100 total points to land it in 5th place among all the other states.
Virginia was listed as the most patriotic state in the country with 70 points while New Jersey came in last with 27.

Good work, Colorado! An active and engaged citizenry is indispensable for a democracy to work. Looks like democracy is working well in Colorado despite our sometimes troubled political times.

Happy 4th of July, everybody!

I would have guessed it fell among the top 20 but 5th is a bit surprising. Anyway, the high percentage of voters and volunteering is something to take pride in. Happy 4th to you!
