That night, the situation escalated. The mom and cubs finally decided to come down from the tree and were greeted by a "fairly large crowd of photo-takers and those that insisted on trying to get close enough to take selfies,” Sgt. Rob Fabrocini with Aspen PD said.

Fabrocini recalls, among other things, witnessing a woman walk up to the bears trying to take a selfie, while carrying her child.

You read that right. A mom with her child approached three wild animals.

As if this couldn't get worse, it does.

The mother bear and cubs tried to make a run for it, only to be pursued by a small group of people who were trying to get video. This led to the cubs getting separated from their mother.

The mother bear returned to the mall, agitated and making loud crying sounds.

Back in the mid eighties I worked at a lakeside theme park in central Florida called Cypress Gardens, which was basically a park with huge botanical gardens, a water ski show and some rides. The gators would come onshore every day to bask in the sun. If a 12' gator is comfortable in the sun, he won't budge an inch when you set your infant child on him for a photo. This actually happened. Fortunately one our horticulturists noticed and took the kid and ran. The poor women got chewed out by a guy who could barely speak English.
You can't fix stupid.

^^My anecdote is much less serious, but I remember a Louisville city councilman saying he was appalled when one of his constituents let their kid attempt to pet a prairie dog in the wild, and the prairie dog bit the child. Crazy!

I had to tell someone at RMNP this summer to stop walking towards a moose. She asked "Are they dangerous?" My reply "Moose are bigger, faster, dumber, and meaner than you, but feel free to take a chance".

Perhaps it's the Disney effect.

Make cartoons and shows that portray wild animals such as tigers, elephants, and bears as being cute and friendly. Some people really must be stupid enough to believe it.

What a lovely story I wish I could have been there so I could get a selfie of myself with the stupid people. I could then post it on my facebook " photo of me with stupid people taking selfies with bears "....

I lived near Yellowstone park's south gate in the late 1970's. Saw the same thing there many times.
