Thanks for the link. IMO it's sort of an apples and oranges thing of a city versus its surrounding metro area.
The CITY of Denver is a fixed geographical area and in that respect the population within the fixed political boundary area of the CITY of Colorado Springs may someday exceed Denver CITY. No argument there.
But the overall metro AREA of Denver is in the millions and I doubt the metro area of Colorado Springs will ever exceed that. Anything is possible but a Colorado Springs metro area of 3+ million people, with no mass transit, will be a nightmare. It'll be wall to wall housing out to Calhan with 1947-era two lane roads to serve it. OMG
I dug up some numbers on wikipedia and got these stats on area and population:
Aurora, 153 sq miles, 350,000 or 2300 per sq mile
Denver, 153 sq miles, 700,000 or 4600 per sq mile
Col Spg, 195 sq miles, 465,000 or 2400 per sq mile
COLO SPGS has the land area to someday be more populous than Denver but if it continues to build SFH sprawl communities it may not. The city of Aurora has the same land area as Denver but has a lot of sprawl too.

I have known this for decades. To be honest given the fact Denver proper is landlocked it is only a matter of time till Colorado Springs proper and even Pueblo proper surpass it in population.

No merging allowed... The VOTE / density is very important to those who pay for advertising (USA version of Pay-for-votes)

Our left coast state of 39 counties is controlled by the 3 most populous counties (as is our neighbor of 36 counties, controlled by the voters in 3 populous counties.) The remaining majority of counties just have to live by the RULES that the non-job creators legislate. Thus we loose 300 - 500

that is conducive to businesses.
SD and WY will probably be able to survive (politically) no major metro areas. ID is at risk. (May become the next 'battleground' state to fall. )

I think there may be some misinformation there. If El Paso county is somewhere at the one million mark, Colorado Springs will be around 650-655k (assuming that Colorado Springs continues to make up 65% of the population), which as stated earlier is below current population. El Paso county can overtake Denver county, but no city proper. I also don't think that Denver geographic boundary is a limiting factor for population growth in the near future, as they have already shown a willingness to build up, and not just in the immediate core of downtown. Several cities have smaller areas with greater population than Denver.

El Paso County and/or the municipality of COS might indeed outpace the City and County of Denver to be the largest county and municipality in the state, but the urban, metro area of COS will never be as large as the Denver metro area.
