I contemplating a labor day weekend to Ouray or Silverton, but am wondering if it's worth it with all the wildfires raging and the smoke that might be in the area. On the off chance someone has a good handle on what the mess of fires looks like and might take a guess if there will still be alot of them still causing smoke out there in two to three weeks time, thought I would ask. Can any locals report on how bad it's been out there? Been horrible in Denver, but I heard geographically the area might be more susceptible to being affected more and accumulating smoke.

There are several smoke radar resources online including this one.

Labor Day weekend? Heck there could be snow on the ground. Be sure to check the CDOT and NWS web sites. Ouray has a web cam https://www.visitouray.com/web-cams

Use the animated gif/loop on this:
https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOE...=G16&sector=nr
It's your best tool for getting a lead time on smoke. As you can see, the front range through Nebraska/Dakotas etc is covered.
While with a flow from the south, the western slope is clear.

Sure can!! I've seen it snow in the Colorado high country in August several times, and could possibly happen this weekend. We're getting a welcome cold front in Mesa County for the next four days, right now GJ's temp is 68 degrees. I was watching the Weather Channel a couple hours ago and they showed the jet stream dropping to central Arizona and coming back up through western Kansas. A side note KKCO-11 is reporting a shutdown in Glenwood Canyon, for now any way.

I'm just going to count on taking the long way if I head out there. I70 seems to be a hopeless mess.

Why would you do that? Take I-25 to HWY 50 to Montrose then 550 to Ouray area. Going to darn near Wyoming is nuts.

I watched the Labor day snow last year live from this cam, while thinking...I hope it isn't like this when I off-road the Alpine loop
Loved your area, particularly the bottom of the black canyon driving down east portal road.
It's the equivalent of driving Monarch pass, only in reverse; super cool/beautiful.
Wish the pine/spruce beetles would vanish though, you can see all the damage from downtown Ouray; on ridge tops.
