Hey everyone,

My wife and I will be driving through Durango and then up Hwy 550 this spring. Based on the time of day we'll be through, we don't want to start the trek down the Million Dollar Highway until the next morning. We'd like to stay somewhere around Durango, but would prefer to stay somewhere unique if possible. Are there any noteworthy places, maybe something with a unique view?

Thanks in advance!

Well, the place I recommend may not have a drop dead view of the La Plata mountains, but if you want unique, and historic--certainly noteworthy. That would be the Strater Hotel downtown on 7th and Main St. It's been a couple decades since I've stayed there.

Hopefully someone can opine on the Strater as to a recent stay.

I stayed there one night before going to a guest ranch. It was very charming and very handy to the train if you're taking the train trip- a block away. Right, no view but a very historic feel. Good restaurant on the first floor with waitresses all dressed like the 1890s, like... fancy girls... Walk to all the galleries if so desired. A real Durango experience, the only place I've stayed there, and I usually like B&B stays.

Check Air Bnb in the area for a unique rental.

For views I'd search Purgatory Resort area and / or Vallecito Lake (by google, trip advisor, airbnb or https://www.vrbo.com/results?q=Valle...20USA&Property Type=cabin.) If you pick a spot away from town, accept the possibility of extra driving after you check in if you want to get back to town. May not be worth it to you this time.
