You’ll be doing 6+ if you go Telluride. Aspen is roughly 4 hours from DEN. It’s far superior to Breck in my opinion.

Maroon Bells when the leaves are changing is better than anything else really....

6 hours is just too much, unless we can find a cheaper price for plane tickets directly to Telluride.

Aspen was kind of our originally front runner, and I think thatís where weíll end up.

A fairly cheap flight location in SW CO is Cortez. But not as cheap as it was a year or two ago. Maybe Grand Junction.

Look at flights into Montrose or even Grand Junction, they should be less expensive than Telluride. Steamboat, Breck, Beaver Creek and Vail are all fun at that time of the year. Oddly many mountain towns have Oktober Fest in September and Telluride has a big film fest which drive up prices.

Aspen sounds like it's the front-runner here. I'll chime in with another suggestion, to consider breaking up the drive from (or back to) DIA by pairing up a few days in Salida and a few days in Crested Butte. Aspen is lovely but seems more than a bit "Rodeo Drive" and "Hamptons" and "Davos" to me, where the billionaires gather to congratulate themselves. That may appeal to you. If not, Salida is both a "real" Colorado mountain town where people actually live (not just tourists and second homes) and has in recent years been discovered as a vibrant destination, with world-class river sports and the Collegiate Peaks nearby. Another two hour drive (of infinite beauty, as opposed to the I70 corridor) brings you to Crested Butte, which is a bit more touristy and has a higher percentage of second homes, but still has a great vibe and lots of interesting Colorado history.

If you want a shorter drive (~2 hours from the airport with limited traffic), consider Frisco. Central to Summit County, and much quieter than Breckenridge (which is just 10 miles down the road). That'd be my first choice.

I'd personally choose Crested Butte over Aspen any day, as Aspen gets crazy crowded, and reeks of money (read: ridiculously overpriced for everything). CB is probably around a 5 hour drive & if the aspens have changed when you come, the easy drives up Kebler Pass, down Ohio Creek Road, or (if you're more adventurous) up to Gothic and toward Scofield Pass (the pass itself is advance 4wd) are three of the most spectacular fall drives in all of Colorado.

Breckenridge and the surrounding towns of Frisco and the Dillon Reservoir are wonderful in mid September.

If you go to Aspen be sure to take a trip through Leadville and over Independence Pass. Maroon Bells outside Aspen is a must-see.

Crested Butte and Telluride are amazing and far better than Aspen. Aspen as a town doesn't impress me all that much. I think it lacks the charm of Crested Butte, Telluride and Breck and there isn't much to do there. You can see it all in a few hours. Breckenridge has a ton of things to do in comparison.

You can take take a ride down the Million Dollar Highway and check out Ouray as well if you stay in Telluride.

Here's a couple of picture taken the first week of September, 2017 outside Breckenridge. That's when the aspens start to change.

Aspen is a different town in September than it is during peak season.
