Good afternoon fellow CD members,

I am trying to plan a mountain getaway for my wife’s birthday, which is in Mid-September. Colorado is always our first choice for a nice vacation/getaway, so why would this time be any different? We always stay near RMNP in Estes Park, but want to change it up this time. That’s where you all come in handy!

I’ve read many great things about Aspen, Telluride, Ouray, etc...it’s a long list of potential places. We will be going for around 5 days, from September 11th-16th, and would love to be able to enjoy some nice hikes, maybe kayaking, just the outdoors in general. Being in a town with some local shops, restaurants, etc...is also a plus. We will be staying in a nice hotel, condo, cabin, etc...We will also have a rental vehicle for transportation. I’ve noticed some areas, hotels & rentals seem kinda pricey for this time of year, any particular reason for this?

Also, I guess I should add in, more than likely will fly into Denver, as the local airports are all super expensive to fly into. So I’d like to keep the drive around 3ish hours from the airport If possible.

Anywho, any help & recommendations appreciated!

That’s a great time to come for rates generally. It’s after the peak summer season and before ski season. Aspen and Telluride are my favorites. Weather is usually still pretty sunny, but evenings will be starting to be pretty cool. If you aren’t tied to staying in a hotel, try Airbnb or Vrbo.com.

You might look into Steamboat.

I was in Telluride late September last year, and it was a great time to be there. Very nice town. We were also in Crested Butte the same week and it, too, was great.

If you stick to 3ish hour drive from Denver airport, you might look at Breckenridge and Vail. Steamboat and Aspen will be a bit further. For more low key, maybe Granby. Fall color watching could explain rates.

Just did a quick search for those dates and found some 1 BRs right in the heart of downtown Aspen for under $250 a night that looked very nice.

Breckenridge is a good suggestion. Try to work the dates out so you're not driving back into Denver on a Sunday afternoon (traffic, accidents).

The 3 hour goal is flexible, I just prefer not to drive 5-6 hours immediately after jumping off a plane ride.
