Speaking of smoke in the area, Colorado residents need to keep in mind what's up with their neighbors. Duchesne, Utah is about a three hour drive NW of Grand Junction and they have their hands full with a wildfire that is now at 47,000 acres. Called the "dollar ridge fire" it is at 4% containment. U.S. 40 was shut down yesterday, has since been re-opened.

add>>>>>A fire caused by lightning is close to the Colo. 318/U.S. 40 junction, maybe 30 miles west of Craig. Reported about 8 p.m. Friday night. So far 200 acres has burned.

The Spring Fire is still very large. I could see separate fire guessing 20 miles distance apart. In fact they reclosed Hwy 160 right before I got there. Going around Hwy 160 is a large trip.

"The highway was opened at 2 p.m. Saturday but was quickly closed again due to increased fire activity and visible smoke. The roadway was reopened just after 4 p.m." Geez - they almost closed it just for me. I was there at 3pm.

CRAIG, Colo. – Firefighters made good progress on containment of the Divide and Thornburg fires yesterday despite strong afternoon winds. They expect the progress to continue today. ... The Divide Fire 23 miles north of Craig is now mapped at 19,947 acres, although it did not actively grow yesterday. About 70 firefighters strengthened firelines and brought the containment to 40 percent yesterday. Crews will continue working the perimeter of the fire today. The Thornburg Fire five miles west of Maybell also did not grow yesterday and is holding at 1,636 acres. About 45 firefighters worked with two helicopters securing the fire’s perimeter yesterday. Crews were busy working a number of new starts last night after lightning moved through northwestern Colorado. The largest is the 188-acre Fawn Fire, actively burning in a rugged, remote area of the Piceance Basin about 30 miles southwest of Meeker. No structures are immediately threatened. About 55 firefighters are working the fire today. Two heavy air tankers (C-130 MAFFS from Colorado Springs) dropped retardant on the fire this morning. Fawn Fire updates are available at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5906/.

Looks like rain is expected along with possible winds. Overall the outlook appears more positive than negative?

This year has been so very dry and so very warm. Guessing these fires were more likely than not. We currently have about a dozen fires to contend with. The Spring Fire is already the third largest in state history. Living close to it, I have no reason to believe that the threat is largely over. They are predicting containment by the end of July. So much can happen in three weeks. Hot windy weather could make it explode again - I would think.

My current prediction is that much of the mountains will burn this year. Have a strong hunch for a few undisclosed reasons (I won't disclose them).

Is there a place where one can place a bet on the fires? I've heard about some awfully wild bets that have been placed and accepted and paid out on. I need to parlay my $10 into $10,000.
