Thanks SO much, everyone! Some of these were on our list, and this definitely helped give me more options to research. Some of them were definitely out of budget though, like Telluride! I know I can't justify quite that much for our next home, when we tend to live in ranch style homes around 1300sqft
We are open to the possibility of building, and have been considering an earthship-type home, which I know limits us even more due to building codes and stuff.
We definitely want to be close-ish to one of the main airports as they offer direct flights to/from home for under $200 round trip, which will make it so much easier to get home and have family visit. I'd love for my grandma to be able to visit, and 5 hours travel time might be more manageable than the 12+ to Alaska.
I am more flexible on snow levels and elevation. We're taking a trip next year to see where we like the best, and I'm planning on renting a house at higher elevations to see how we manage it. That's a great tip to look for real estate after major snowstorms! Thanks!

There are certainly some great mountain views from parts of Estes Park. Here's a vacation home in Windcliff Estates, for example...

We've stayed a few nights in this area, although not at this particular property. The mountains are really right in your face, they are so close.
In the various valley towns and Front Range towns the views can be very nice, but the mountains are farther away.

Not sure I could do full time in Estes. The summer tourism is so crazy.

I concur. It's nuts. Our friends lived there for 8 years and moved to Loveland a couple of years ago because they just couldn't take the tourons any more.

I think the altitude should be of concern to OP (always at sea level). Many retirees cannot hack / enjoy 7500'+, but there are plenty who can! (Including a 95 year old friend doing well HIGH above Estes Park.
My mom had to leave her gorgeous view home in CO (@ age 66) and move to lower altitude in NM (with gorgeous mtn view). She could no longer breath in Colorado. (I usually blame that on the constant Brown Cloud along front range, but she was well into the mtns and it never seemed brown / hazy at her place.)

We are open to the possibility of building, and have been considering an earthship-type home, which I know limits us even more due to building codes and stuff.
