Why do Colorado drivers leave 1 or more car lengths between them and the car in front of them at a red light? It's baffling and inconsiderate.

Because I can.
Because it drives you crazy.
Because it allows me accelerate at a certain desired pace.
Because I am an old fart and you kids need to get off my lawn.

To give the driver a little bit of space to maybe not run into the car in front when you plow into him because you aren't paying attention.

I'll admit that it sometimes bugs me too but I've been hit at a stoplight when the car behind me was right on my bumper and was hit. That car then rebounded into me, wrecking my car.

We do? All Colorado drivers? Every single one?

In Montrose the car behind you crawls into your lap at a red light.

Over-cautiousness. It shows up in other ways too.

My car has auto shut off. So I may come to a stop and then the car in front of me creeps up. I am not going to restart the car just to fill a gap for 30 seconds.

It is because most are getting a jump-start at staring at their phone at the red light so they just stop instead of creeping forward to keep behind the car in front of them.

What do you see in the rear view mirror when at a light? I'll bet it is a person looking down!

I will sometimes take that empty spot (especially on my motorcycle) just to see their reactions - priceless!!

When I lived on the Front Range back in the dark ages that very same thing happened to me. I was involved in a 6 car chain reaction on a damn slick road at Belleview and Broadway, not the most pleasant place to be at regarding a multi vehicle dinger in mid January. Fortunately the only thing in front of me was the pedestrian crosswalk, I was pushed forward a few feet. I was lucky, was wearing my seat belt, and I was driving my '75 International 3/4 ton which was a tank. From that point forward I always give an extra few feet to the vehicle I get behind.

In case someone tries to 'jack me I have enough room to pull around the car in front of me and escape.

This morning I was at an intersection light with a full car length between me and the car in front of me. I started to gently pull forward to fill in the gap in case someone else came up to the intersection behind me, but the car in front of me went into reverse to stop me and the driver started gesticulating wildly. I don't know if it was some weird coincidence and that guy was in some alternate universe in his vehicle and his weird behavior had nothing to do with me, or if he was really having a conniption fit over someone behaving entirely normally and appropriately at a stoplight intersection. You just never know what you're going to encounter on the roads these days....
