We are thinking to make a road trip to Durango, CO this Christmas.

We got 2 young kids: 5 and 3, so might do an overnight in between (santa rosa?). The reason we pick Durango is older kiddo is into train, so we are thinking to do the Polar Express train ride and snow tubing in Purgatory Resort. The plan is to stay at Durango and drive to Purgatory Resort.

Anyone has done this before and have any experience to share? How dangerous the road will be? Do we need to prepare for tire chain?

Do you have winter driving experience? If not, it probably would be better if you could fly in. If you really want to drive, make sure you have good winter tires; the ones with the M+S symbol. That's assuming that you have a front wheel drive or AWD car (don't even try with rear wheel drive). If the conditions are bad enough that you need chains, then you really shouldn't be out driving.

TripAdvisor has a Road Trips Forum. You can post questions there about the best route from Austin to Durango.

That train ride is amazing! Durango is a great town to visit.

OP, bringing chains is not a bad idea but please familiarize yourself with their operation prior to standing on the side of the road in a blizzard trying to figure them out. Make sure you have good tread on your tires before the trip. You’ll be fine! We only lose a few Texas tourists to snowstorms each year. The odds are in your favor

Coming up from the south, you may not encounter all that much snow until you get much closer to Durango.

The ice storms in eastern NM can be worse than snow. Could be anything for road conditions, depending what fronts hit where.

No winter driving experience. But did a Christmas road trip to Santa Fe a couple years ago. On the way back, we got hit by snow storm. That was no fun.

Got an AWD Chevy Equinox with M+S tires on it (just checked). I might bought tire chain and have it just in case.

The plan is to stay @ HI Express Durango and drive to Purgatory - Is this reasonable?

Use the COLO highway dept's road maps of closures and conditions. The state does a good job clearing the roads. Unless there's a raging blizzard then you should be fine.
