Dear Locals:

We are a gay couple in our 40s moving for work to Colorado. We are moving from Charleston, SC (prior to that we lived in Washington DC). I will be working in Broomfield, CO- but would prefer renting first and then buying in near future. We make a decent living and can afford upto $3k-$3.5K in rent.

We are not bar goers.... but do appreciate a diverse community with strong acceptance of our lifestyle. Can you suggest if we should move to Boulder, co or Denver, Co? How is traffic in rush hours from Boulder/Denver to Broomfield?

We like hiking, walking with our dogs, nice restaurants, and theater . We would either live with scenic view, or in proper city where we could walk every where.

Please provide your feedback and appreciate any additional tips?

Many Thanks and Happy New Year!

Boulder would be the better choice, people are more open minded there, everyone should be accepting of your lifestyle. Although I don’t believe there are any houses for rent that will fit your budget.

Jay, welcome to Colorado. Sounds like Boulder would be for you, but you should start by renting in Broomfield and be close to work.

I tend to think that the Boulder to Broomfield commute is a bit better than Denver to Broomfield. Boulder has great restaurants, tons for a city its size. Denver has more. The main theater district is downtown Denver, but making that commute during the evening or weekend for a show isn’t too bad. Boulder has dense walkable neighborhoods, so does Denver.

Boulder has a long history of being gay friendly, but there isn't a very strong gay community. It's more like nobody cares about somebody's sexual orientation. Sometimes gay people who move to Boulder miss gay bars and other gay focused groups. Outside of that, it meets all of your other criteria. I'd suggest renting in Boulder for a year and see if it's for you. Boulder is a unique place and it's not for everyone.

btw, Denver is also very gay friendly.

I think that you won't have any acceptance issues in either Denver or Boulder. It's a non-issue most places in the larger metro area. I'd go with what others have suggested and rent near work to start.

OP,
Your post describes my next door neighbors. Except that they only have one dog.
They seem to be happy here in The Berkeley neighborhood.

I neglected to mention that we recently elected an openly gay, Jewish guy from Boulder as our governor.
