We are considering retiring in Buena Vista. Any thoughts about access to medical care ?

For anything you need that Salida doesn't provide you'll be heading to Colorado Springs or Denver. For many people, HRRMC provides the majority of what they need, but if you've got specific healthcare needs which they don't have a provider for, you might find yourself making trips to the Front Range more likely than you'd prefer to. However, the hospital is currently undergoing a major expansion which should help provide more access.

Here's a link to HRRMC's website. You can get a feel for what services they offer there.

There is also a walk-in clinic on county road 317 that is run by the HRRMC:

It’s just a small clinic and you’ll be going to Salida or the front range for any major procedures.

Thanks for the info on medical availability. How about general livability of this area? Friendliness of people, crime, road maintenance, things to do?

People are super friendly, crime is low, road maintenance is good, lots to do if you are into the outdoors. Depends on what you like to do, but there are lots of volunteer activities. Cost of housing is really high. There definitely is a negative impact from all the tourists in the summer; locals go to the only grocery store before 9:00 a.m. just to find a parking spot.

I suggest that you look at the Facebook page "What's Happening in Buena Vista". There are some malcontents who don't like all the growth, but you can find that anywhere.
