How small are you willing to go? Take a look at Custer County.

Yes Westcliffe is an option if you'd go that small, all things considered, including the winter. Colorado City too.

Milder? Canon City.

Trinidad is borderline. Interesting enough for some. Too rough for others.

Pueblo or Pueblo West if you want the least winter and snow.

Fountain if being nearer a big city is important.

Seriously though, what constitutes expensive and similarly, what makes something good?
Other items of consideration: recreational preferences, medical access, internet capability, airport access, weather patterns or range of temp tolerance?
There are a host of things you may want or need that our clear at this point.
You said it... all those. How about a big store like Home Depot so
you don't have to drive 40 miles? ....With neighbors "not on top of you'.

Excellent.

But, Westcliffe is too small cold and remote in my opinion. Hospital? Airport?

Yes, or just outside Pueblo a ways...

Yes, you are probably right that Westcliffe is probably too remote and wintry for the OP. Perhaps I should have left that one out. But it is one of the closer to the front range, true mountain towns. Someone (else?) with enough winter tolerance might like it.

Well then, if ur into driving 2 hours to an airport...there are great places!
Salida, Rye, Cotapaxie, Penrose, Fairplay...
Pagosa Springs, Paonia? All great places...esp Salida...Art, river, biking...tourists, restaurants, beauty, hip.

Bottom line is we need more info than we've been given. With the current expectations list, the range of possible places is very, very broad and we still don't know what constitutes good, interesting, major, nice, inexpensive, etc.

Lets try this, OP, where are you now, what do you like and dislike about it, and what about that do you want or not want from that in your retirement locale?

Exactly...
Gosh , just an aside...I spent the night once in Westcliffe, fun little adventure...it was -20 below 0!....beautiful and still and all the stars gorgeous...the local diner/restaurants are like going to any small town where everybody knows everyone...better there, cuz the are used to tourists, at least...but they all kinda look at ya.

Things people can overlook:
Hospitals and easy access to medical care
Good grocery shopping
Interesting, non chain, restaurants
Things to do in all seasons
Community feel, liberal, conservative, non welcoming of outsiders, etc
Availability of internet, weird, but if too rural, good luck
