I, too, have gotten tee'd off that someone hasn't answered me. Mostly when I have gone to some trouble to answer their post that requested information. So don't worry about it; it happens to all of us. I have learned, give out the advice in little dribs, and see if you get an answer. I will no longer post extensive links to first-time posters. That's just me.

Default Interpreting the Satire

Just for the record I thought most of this thread was really funny even though I am not generally into “one big giant lame hate fest “ (copyright 2009 by sav858, all rights reserved, thank you for the colorful description).

Let’s see if I can summarize all the things that various and individual Coloradoans have gotten off their chest here (by writing some wonderful satire that developed into some very philosophical points!):

1. Don’t ask general questions until you at least try and read the indexed threads on similar topics.
2. Don’t repeat questions unless the answers are really old or you don’t mind being called lazy or stupid.
3. Don’t ask about general things that you can at least use the city data info to answer (such as median price of a house or male/female ratio).
4. If you can’t find it, ask. If it does not come up in a key word search (or two or three), ask.
5. If you want reassurance on things realtors don’t usually mention, ask. I think this does include things like snakes, bugs, and allergens.
6. Don’t ask anything unless you plan to come here within 6 months, for sure.
7. Don't expect anyone to make the final decision for you.
8. Don’t be youthful and optimistic and hopeful about the future (now we are sadly sounding like Rhode Island and Ohio!)
9. And, above all, Remember to say please and thank-you! Often!

For those who were offended: I can guarantee that every poster in this thread has violated someone else’s pet peeves at least once, and we all know it. The point being, if we can’t make fun of ourselves, then what fun can we have?

I have been guilty of posting before reading every post in a topic (because, of course, I have an opinion that was more knowledgeable than anyone else's!) You can be sure I read every post in this one.

I have also posted in an old topic. I think that is better to re-open the topic if it is not closed, than to open a new topic on the same subject. That way a new researcher gets the benefit of up to date answers and the managers have less work. This thread alone has lasted from May 2008 until October 2008. So is that an old thread or a new one? If the moderator feels it has outlived its purpose, it can be shut off.

City-data is heavily trafficked by people who wish to move, consider moving, or buying and selling property or businesses. But the growing number of topics indicates other uses including giving opinions and, yes, a place for people to make contacts. After all, if we don’t feel comfortable with the details of a place, why would we move there?

P.S. Don’t post in Denver if you are interested in Highlands Ranch, Aurora, Lakewood, Castle Rock, Littleton, Englewood, Sheridan, Adams County or Golden, etc. That’s my pet peeve. You wouldn't post Brooklyn, NY in Manhattan, NY or Orange County in LA. Suburban does not equal urban.

Please. Denver's suburbs are not big enough to have their own forums and they don't stand on their own without being part of the Denver metro. You use LA and OC as an example. OC is big enough to have its own forum. But LA's forum will include cities like Torrance, San Gabriel, or Santa Clarita because they're within LA county and in LA's economic orbit. If someone's moving to Denver, they could live in any of the cities you listed and still work and shop in Denver.

WRONG. The "Denver" forum is really the "Denver metro area" forum.

I agree. Chicago has a "Chicago Suburbs" forum, and there are a number of suburban LA forums, but most cities include their suburbs in their forums. The suburban cities fit more with Denver than with the general "Colorado" forum, which seems to be more about the rural and mountain towns. I think there is some CD rule that there have to be a certain number of posts before there can be a separate forum.

I was the Moderator for Colorado when we set up the sub-forums.

The Denver metro area includes a lot of "cities" with specific names. To see all those adjoining cities one only needs to click on the Denver index, then scroll down to see the city names listed in alphabetical order. I looked at a map of the Denver area where I considered Highway 470 as a "beltway" around the metro area, thus anything inside that beltway (or very near to it) became part of the Denver sub-forum.

Same sort of deal for the Colorado Springs sub-forum, the index for which lists a lot of nearby towns or areas.

For Boulder and Fort Collins sub-forums, we actually listed the names of the nearby towns in the title of the sub-forum.

Pueblo, Pueblo West and Canon City are too far from COL SPGS to be in that sub-forum, but didn't have enough postings (at the time) to merit a sub-forum all their own, thus they are in the main statewide forum.

If I ran C-D, or had true control of Colorado forums, I'd partition the state up into several regional forums as well. There'd be a sub-forum for the greater Pueblo area, down to the NM border. There'd be a sub-forum for the high-country in the central part of the state; there'd be one for the western slope; there'd be one for Durango and the southwest corner of the state too. The totality of the eastern plains might be a sub-forum to match its geology and rural nature.

Any number of things could be done but it all boils down to how much time a volunteer mod is able to donate. A geek like me could make it a full time job, but I'm notta gonna do it, nor can we expect volunteer mods to do it unless we find a shut-in with a PC who is in love with C-D. As it is, we have it under control. For out of the way places not in a sub-forum, the best way to find data is to use the advanced search function, it really is VERY good.

The reason LA, NYC, and Chicago have separate forums for some of their suburbs is that those cities are so huge and the volume of posting on those forums is so high, that without splitting their forums up, following those forums would become tiresome. Even then, such as the LA forum, the LA forum is for all of Los Angeles county, not just the city of LA. The Denver forum has nowhere even remotely near as much volume as those forums. It has nothing to do with some false ideological pretense of Denver being "urban" vs its "suburbs." Most of the city of Denver is suburban in character anyway. In fact, I think the creation of the Boulder forum was unnecessarily; there's simply not enough volume of posts there to even sustain a discussion going. Boulder could have been easily absorbed into a renamed "Greater Denver-Boulder area forum." So little happens there I don't even bother reading the Boulder forum. Ditto for Fort Collins-- another tiny, unnecessary forum.

Using the criteria of the site owner, Boulder and its surrounding small towns more than met the numerical minimum number of threads to warrant a separate sub-forum. Same for Fort Collins.

I counted all those threads for those and other areas in my request to the site owner for sub-forums. He agreed fully.

I counted threads for other areas and did not come up with sufficient postings to justify more sub-forums - at that time. Another year may prove sufficient for subs in other regions of the state.

Thank you! I absolutely positively agree with you and you're getting 3 reps from me right now.

Many of us that don't live in Denver, Boulder, CoSprings, Ft Collins, etc, have to sort through all that other Denver Metro garbage just to get to our city forums? I don't think so. I think Commerce City, Thornton, Broomfield, Golden, Aurora, Westminster, Arvada, Wheatridge, Edgewater, Littleton, Englewood, Centennial, Castle Rock, Parker, Glendale, etc. should all go under Denver.

Until Pueblo and Grand Junction gets their own sub forum, don't even complain about something so trivial.
