Verizon or Alltel has about the best overall coverage in rural Colorado. The I-70 corridor (loathsome place that it is, in my opinion) has pretty good cell coverage by most all carriers. I have Verizon and it works pretty well there.
If you are traveling in the rest of Colorado, Verizon probably has a slight edge in coverage overall, with Alltel having a little better coverage in some areas of south-central and southwestern Colorado.
Though the cellular companies are no longer (as of 2/28/08) required to maintain analog, there are a lot of places in rural Colorado where the only cell service available is 800 MHz analog. That is why I still carry a tri-band (with 800 analog) cell phone. I will often have service in remote areas where the fancy Blackberries, picture phones, etc. (virtually none of which have analog) won't. Both Verizon and Alltel still sell one or two models of phones with analog, but they aren't the fancy phones.
