Has anyone recently spent any time on the area of the Rio Grande south of where Hwy 142 crosses the river? If so from there to the New Mexico border is most of the river just wide and not too deep or fast? Or does it start getting faster like it is in New Mexico before it leaves the state? PineHollowgal

Are you planning on fishing or rafting? It depends on snow melt...This year will be crazy I am sure, really what it depends on snow melt.

Default Rio Grande Info

We like to fly fish. Some friends of ours have a little property on the river there, but they have not been there in years. We are going up on vacation in early September. Not planning on camping there just sitting around and fishing a little. Pinehollowgal

Wink Kind of

As I recall it was on a dirt road paralleling CO 142, but near the New Mexico border, that crossing the Rio Grande river on a small bridge was memorable. It appeared that to the north the river flowed fairly wide and flat, but just south of the bridge the river delved down, dropping in rapids between jagged, black volcanic rock on either side. It was rather dramatic, a distinct dividing line.

My guess that anywhere south of here you would find the Rio Grande confined to an increasingly deep canyon. It certainly is by the time it passes near Taos, NM. And it is also at Wild Rivers Recreation Area, accessed via NM 378, north of Questa, NM, through Cerro, NM.

If memory serves the Rio Grande is just as wide and flat were CO 142 crosses it. Much the case until past South Fork, CO, where it becomes more of a mountain river.

Thanks for the info. I believe the land is 8 miles south of 142. Another way to get to it is go straight across 248 all the way to the river from 159. Thanks for your in put. Pinehollowgal
