Avon? Frisco? Silverthorne?
Hi, I am new to the forum. Ready for a fresh start I am thinking about moving to Avon, Frisco or Silverthorne. What is your experience regarding these places? What are the advantages, the disadvantages? Thanks for your insight...

IF you can afford any of them ...kudos to you! Not being snotty, just the truth!
My personal fave would be Silverthorne. It is near to all of them but, especially Lake Dillon and Breckinridge!!
Google them and you will see what I mean!!!!!!!!!
By the By...I go to Breckenridge often for a weekend away and for lunch (it is exactly 100 easy miles from my door!!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

All a bit different
All three are very close to I-70; not sure about Avon, CO but in either Frisco, CO or Silverthorne, CO you could be far enough removed to never know the interstate was there (save in ease of travel, which influences all). Either Frisco or Silverthorne enjoys relatively easy access to the front range and Denver, Avon is more isolated in this respect.
I believe Avon used to be a less expensive bedroom community for Vail, but this probably far less the case now. Avon surely, and certainly Frisco and Silverthorne expensive in real estate. Unless you have lots of money this alone will prove a big factor against so many others which make such places desirable places to live.
Vail, and Avon to an extent, is a mountain community like Frisco and Silverthorne, but Summit County has a lot of options within it and so less insular. Silverthorne can be nice but compared to Frisco, which has a lovely downtown, there seems no there there. Either Frisco or Silverthorne has ready access to Lake Dillon, and Frisco a marina proper. Weather wise they are all high mountain locations, although within Summit County probably a bit more severe.
If you like hiking, biking, skiing and other outdoor pastimes any of these a good choice, with Summit County in particular a mecca for such things.
A brief excursion to all three should probably help decide which, or something similar, feels most like home.

Hi, thanks for the replies - I am not thinking about purchasing a home right away (I can't afford it), more like renting...
What about entertainment or shopping in these places - movies, theatres, malls, restaurants, etc.?
Is there a difference in weather between Summit County and Eagle County - amount of snow, etc.?
Thanks!

If you've never been here, you really need to visit. Very different vibes.
We live in Silverthorne.
Silverthorne is not the stereotypical mountain town with a quaint Main Street. Around I-70 it's mostly strip malls. The northern end of town is mostly residential. Lots of full-time residents, young families with kids, and a pretty good sense of community (everyone knows each other). The mansion communities up the hills are more empty and isolated. Lots of apartment complexes and condos a little bit south off Highway 9 (and up Wildernest). With the larger residential community and slightly more distance from the resorts, Silverthorne (at least the residential areas) aren't jammed with tourists during the high season/weekends.
Frisco (at least the south/western part) is the more mountain town with a typical Main Street (albeit with mostly tourist trap shops). Frisco is VERY expensive (on par with Breck, if not more). Can be quite crowded during weekends/holidays.
The mountains are our entertainment. As Idunn said, hiking, biking, skiing, climbing, kayaking, fishing, all abound here. Decent variety of restaurants (be prepared for waits on winter weekends). Can't help you much with shopping (other than everyday shops), but there's the outlet mall in Silverthorne. Denver is about an hour away.
For more specific info, you can check out the local newspaper (including classifieds for rentals): Summit Daily News for Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper and Frisco Colorado
Can't tell you much about Avon.

Hi Bunnyrabbit
First, where would you be moving from? Do you have experience living at a higher elevation? It is very different than living at say, 5,000 feet.
I have experienced Silverthorne and Frisco as a visitor during ski season and sometimes in the summer. I am pretty sure there's a movie theater in both towns. There are lots of restaurants in both. There is an outlet mall in Silverthorne. Frisco has a very cool little downtown and another shopping area on Hwy 9.
The weather can be different between Summit County and Eagle County believe it or not. There are times when Vail and Beaver Creek get a lot more snow than the Summit County ski areas.
I agree with Idunn. Your best bet is to visit all three towns and see what feels good to you!

Thanks for the feedback, I find it very useful - the newspaper link is a great help! Thanks. Can you please, tell me some more about the weather? (I am moving from the East coast). Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to go out just to see what is it like out there...

Here's a weather link that you might find useful:
Silverthorne, Colorado (80497) Conditions & Forecast : Weather Underground
You can get the history and climate of just about any area for any particular date.
Living at an elevation of 9,000 feet or so is very different. I think Avon is about 7500 feet. It's extremely dry so that's a big adjustment. A humidifier will come in very handy. The summer is short but beautiful. It doesn't really get hot. Autumn is great. Winter is long... it can start snowing in September and it can keep snowing through May. Obviously those areas will get a lot of snow-- that's where the ski resorts are.
