Gimlet--I was not aware of those statistics. I am sure because we are growing we are getting more trouble makers than in the past. I don't know how that compares to other towns that have so many new people coming in. Crime rate is up everywhere. I am afraid we are just getting the big cities virus. And they call it progress!

I am afraid I am one that hates like the dickens to see the growth. I used to be surrounded by fields, orchards and good vistas. Now I look at houses. We are natives and will just hang in there, I guess.

I'm not passing judgement or trying to come across that way. People in Canon say they feel safe and secure, but that contradicts the stats listed on the site. I'm wondering if the stats are accurate? That's an average of over 2.5 rapes per month. Are you guys seeing that in the news? Or does that seem like an error? Would you feel safe having your teenage daughter walk home from school in Canon City? Have you noticed a surge in crime in the last several years?

I come from a rural area so I understand the concern and the issues with growth. I'm not sure I call it progress as well. I may be taking a job there, but just wanted to get a first hand opinion of that snapshot. I'm a single Dad raising my girls and working full time so they would be on their own for periods of time. They are mature and capable, but just interested in hearing your opinions.

I read the online newspaper each day and have not read anything about these rapes. I understand crime increases as populations grow but you would expect to see trends in the numbers and that's not the case with the rape count. It went from 0 each year to being in the 20's and 30's all of a sudden. So either something is wrong or changed in the reporting methodology or there's a real problem.

Gimlet--heck ya, lots of kids walking home. Even at night. But I don't think I would be conforable with that by themselves. Summer when hot, lots of people doing their walking after dark. As far as the rapes go, I have not heard or read and I have teenagers in the extended family. Do read about more of other crimes than used to be. I do not live in Canon city limits but at this point as a rural person myself, I would say use your head and teach your kids to be aware also. A few yrs ago I never locked doors, well most everyone does now. I am afraid it is happening everywhere.

Default Be careful about Canon City

Look before you take the leap of moving here! Yes the climate is great and some good scenery but the prison mentality IS a problem and the crime statistics are a bit shocking for a small town. 43 registered sex offenders in town as well. Schools are rated below average on Colorado CSAP tests and trending downward.[ moderator cut ]
