(Disclosure) I am a real estate agent at the RE/MAX Cimarron office in the town of Ridgway. My wife, and two small children (4yr old boy, 2yr old girl) have lived in Ridgway for over 3 years. We are in our mid-thirties and have a pretty good feel for the pulse of regoinal education, communities, possibilities, etc.
No doubt Telluride has an amazing school system. Ridgway's schools also did very well in the last few years. I have a custom home builder client here in town that takes his daughter to the Mountian School.
I will say that I recently had a lady, who has lived in Telluride for the last 20 years, look at property in Ridgway with me recently, and what she said was interesting. She said, "When I come over that hill into the town of Ridgway, I just feel better." She went on to say that Telluride is just exhuasting, and to "clickish". She is a dance instructor and, in her words, "left-leaning liberal". But was just worn out by Telluride.
Having said all of that, it really boils down to where you want to be. There are great things about Telluride, and of course incredible beauty. I would of course be more than happy to give you more information about some "outside" areas that may work better. [mod cut]
