Colorado Native: I agree - my last rental was on the southside, a few blocks from DNF .. I loved it there (except for the all night train smoke) .. I loved that I could easily live w/o a car and the people are all laid-back and friendly.

Hey Chris ~ try placing an and on western slope housing wanted classifieds - craigslist . You can look for roomies and you can try to find a place asap for sept 1.

Good luck

Thanks for the tips everyone!

So I am typing this from within Durango as we speak.

Tomorrow I begin searching. I am staying at the Double Tree Hotel. Does anyone have any extra tips for me? Craigslist hasn't helped too much and almost all the ads in the Durango Herald say no students.

Does it matter that I am coming from an apartment and have a reference of paying my rent this past year?

Don't tell them you're a student, for starters.

Won't they find out quickly that I am a student? They might ask to see some proof of income, etc. Might be reason enough to terminate any lease I signed.

While vacationing in Durango, I saw this article:

Looks like Durango is pricing its students out of the area.

This has been a tough couple of days. At this point, I have found nothing. I've gotten a lot of bad breaks, and am worried about what I am going to do.

Chances are, I won't be able to find an apartment in the limited amount of time I have here tomorrow.

There is very little available as far as studio or one bedroom apartments are concerned. I have checked with all the apartment complexes I could find, the property managers, even the real estate companies to no avail.

The best lead I had turned out not to allow pets. I've got a cat.

This means that I will have to come out here at the end of August to attend school. What will I do with all of my things, with my cat, and where will I stay until I find a place? Is this an omen that Fort Lewis College/Durango is not right for me?

Don't feel badly. According to this article, 75% of families in the area cannot afford to own a home in Durango, and many people living there struggle just to get by due to the exorbitant cost of living. This article does a good job pointing out the reasons why rentals in the area are so scarce. Click here:

It would seem that Durango isn't the right place for a lot of people- i.e., anyone not independently wealthy, or sponging off of parents who are independently wealthy. Based on what I've seen, FLC definitely earns its rather infamous nickname, "Fort Lazy" College.

I realized pretty quickly that Durango wasn't right for me, and I have a medical degree. For your money, you can find a better living situation- and a much better education- elsewhere.

Now I wouldn't go that far Borbory...
I know a lot of people that went to the Fort that received awesome educations and are doing great things now. I bet you didn't know that their Chemistry program is one of the best in the country.
Just because you had a less than stellar experience doesn't mean the next guy will, too. I had trouble finding an apartment in Seattle, it came literally down to the day of my lease ending at one place and finally finding another apartment. The rental crunch is not only felt in Durango.
I would recommend to the OP that he should look for roommates. It doesn't have to be a permanent situation, but it would allow him to relax and find a better living situation rather than rushing into one that would be mediocre.

I thought it was Ft. Loser or Ft. Leisure? haha, I went there for a semester and one thing, or two things, ok, three things I really miss:

1. Having a campus. Going to school at Auraria Campus in Denver really didn't cut it campus-wise.

2. KDUR.

3. Having class outside.

4. Smaller, more intimate classes. I learned far more in my philosophy class there than at Univ. of Colorado at Denver.

That said, I remember most of my friends at Ft. Lewis roomied with others and lived in houses, not apts. They all had pets since they were in houses. There's an older area, off of 6th Ave. (they don't call it that anymore, it's called College Ave. I think??) where there are tons of rental houses. I'm not sure how they got in. I do remember seeing signs in the yards.

You decide. It's whatever you think it is.
