We are planning an August trip from Montana to Durango, CO. Can anyone tell me when the sagebrush usually blooms there?

Sagebrush? You have a better chance of catching the sagebrush blooming (whenever that is) in Cortez or New Mexico.

Do you mean sagebrush or rabbitbrush (chamisa)? Sagebrush generally has very inconspicous flowers, while the yellow blooms of the rabbitbrush are very apparent. Both generally bloom anywhere from mid-August to mid-September. The old saying is that the blooming of rabbitbrush is the sign of the end of summer.

Default fall blooms

Thanks jazzlover. I actually am more interested in the rabbit brush, but most people mistake the two. I know that they usually bloom about the same time. The question is, which week should we show up? Or does the bloom time vary from year to year?

The bloom varies with amount of summer precipitation and temperatures. I always figure the rabbitbrush to be starting to bloom pretty heavily by the third week in August. Of course, the bloom can last well into September in many years.

From what I can see, this summer has seen fairly normal temperatures across most of south-central and southwestern Colorado. Unlike the northern half of the state, the Southwest Monsoon seems to have gotten active earlier and somewhat heavier than normal--especially in New Mexico. Who knows whether that lasts for the remainder of the summer.

Default Thanks again

Thanks again Jazzlover. Sounds like if we head there about the third week of August, it should be about right.
