Which route is preferable and why? I-70 or I-80? Both are about the same distance and time. Are there differences in these highways that make one preferable over the other?

My son is advising me to take I-70 but all the online mapping sites give I-80 as the route to take.

Thanks!

Having done this trip several times in a jeep I would recommend taking I-70.

There are fewer services across Kansas and Missouri than there are in Nebraska and Iowa. I-80 is the old Oregon Trail route. Some of those towns have been serving tourists for > 100 years. It is hard to find a restaurant in Kansas, and not much easier in MO. Ditto gas stations.

There's greenery along what I think is the North Platte river all the way to the Missouri.

If you're on 70 coming west through Kansas to Colorado, you better like looking at wheat, especially once you get past Hays.

The OP still hasn't answered my question; What part of Colorado are you going to? The state is about 104,000 square miles!

I did the I-80 drive about 20 years ago. I thought it took forever to cross PA - then I encountered Nebraska! Chicago to Denver is one, big corn/wheat field.

I give up. I must be on everybody's ignore list. I explained when and where and why to jog from 70 to 80 and why 80 is just a little better than 70 in spots and I will acknowledge that others on here (Katiana, Bullfish, etc.) have given good input as well about the fact that services on both routes are sufficient.

I think the OP is long gone and has already come back on and thanked us and his mind is probably made up. For all we know, he's already here or on his way. I just wanted to know where in Colorado he was comin' to.

Oh well. This thread is dead for me. Happy Thursday all.

Both roads are a bag of suck. I've driven both of them to and from Ohio, and I can't tell you how much I hate driving through Kansas and Nebraska.

Those 2 states can dissapear from the Union for all I care.

Hey Ryan! Were you the one way back when you wanted to give all of eastern Colorado to Kansas? That's the fruited plains out there. That's what feeds a nation and much of the world if politics would let it. I take it you don't have a stash of camouflage or John Deere underwear!

Yeah, that was me man, but rest assured, I have a huge stash of camo. I'm addicted to it. Check out my toolbox!
