Default Where to live in Colorado

Hello, I have scoured the boards for information, but want to post a question of my own. I would like to relocate my family to Colorado. We are considering both north and south of denver. We have only ever visited for vacation-vail, breckenridge, keystone, boulder. I have a family and want a place to live where I can have a bit of land-0.5+ acres, maybe even a small farm with horses less than half a mil. I am a vet and can work almost anywhere, but my husband will probably have to communte to a big city-he works in distribution/logistics. I want a small town with farmer's markets, street fairs, and enough shopping for necessities. I am looking for a slower more family oriented lifestyle. we moved from ga to ca and don't appreciate the people, traffic, crowding of the LA area. Do y'all have any suggestions? I am not expecting an elaboration on all small towns in Colorado, just where is the best small town near a big city to raise a family. Mountains, lakes and parks are great. You know that movie 'Funny Farm' with Chevy Chase? How about something like that-without the mean post man.
