Relocation
Twenty something single female looking to move back a small mountain town (pop 10,000 +-). Not afraid of cold weather, snow, being 2+ hours from a major city (denver, springs, pueblo). Looking into Canon City and Craig Colorado amongst others... any ideas?!

I would even consider Whitefish Montana. There is an international airport near by. 20 some miles from Glacier National Park. Flathead Community College is nearby in Kalispell. I lived there for 3 years and would move back in a flash. Super cool Mountain town. 1.5 hours from Canada.

Neither Craig nor Canon City are "mountain towns," per se. Close to mountains, yes, but Canon sits in a relatively arid valley, and Craig in rolling sagebrush-covered hills.
The best way is to buck up, make a trip here, and look. Just know that the affordability index (living cost compared to wages) pretty much sucks in all of the non-metro areas of Colorado. Just a hard, cold fact of life.

Jazzlover is right. I worked on the first unit at the Yampa Valley coal plant a little south of Craig on a short assignment in late '75, early '76. In the month of January the high temperature for the entire month was 24. Every night 15 to 30 below. Canon City has 4 seasons, can get a litttle toasty in July. But Jazz is right- best way is to spend a few days in each area. Speaking of which-Jazz! The OP knows a little bit about small towns and cold weather. If you care to, check out New Mexico newer thread on Raton (Rain, Rain, Raton). She has good comments on there! Could use your opinion too!

DOUBLE H - My dad works at Craig Station and has since 1985.
You can get decent wages in Northwest Colorado if you're willing to work long hours as a roughneck on a natural gas rig. The coal mines and power plants also pay fairly well, too. Other than that, though, your choices are pretty limited. Many folks in Craig travel to Steamboat for work.
