So they are waiting to see what kind of ski season it's shaping up to be. If Vail has snow ... and other major resort areas do not, as has happened in some recent ski seasons ... Vail will be at a premium price again and worth it. If Vail doesn't have great snow and other places have excellent conditions, then it may be a "soft" sales year for Vail and bargains will be available. There's still time to see how the season is shaping up .... Utah's been getting some awesome early season snow while Colorado lags at this point.

My friends are telling me it's looking pretty bleak and if the economy continues it's march downwards it will probably be one of the worst seasons in memory. The upside will be good prices for the first time in a while.

The prices are already good! At least for flights. I paid only $220 on American Airlines for a roundtrip Jacksonville, FL-Vail for the last weekend in January. Haven't yet decided on a hotel in Vail or Beaver Creek, mostly because I'm afraid I'll "miss a deal." Then again, the closer ski season comes, the [generally] more expensive they get. I suppose $200 a night isn't bad for a Sheraton in Beaver Creek.

$220 is pretty good for the fare to Eagle.
The Sheraton isn't in Beaver Creek though. It's in Avon, down the hill about 5 miles away from the base of BC. Just so you don't have any surprises.
Sometimes the prices will actually go down close to the date if sales are poor, however it can swing the opposite way.

After a little further research I did indeed figure this out! Good thing you pointed it out! Now I'm going to be v e r y careful when looking at non-resort hotels in the area. Thanks!

I would be as I found some vail hotel, condo websites to be deceptive about location. Because of the way the slopes are in BC and Vail, they are very few ski in ski out places. And often places described as a short walk to the slopes are far from it!

That's right wanneroo! A short walk is used to sometimes lure people in!!
Also, people coming to that high altitude, can sometimes get winded just going up and down steps!! Be careful and check to make sure!!

Don't forget to check on "deals" that may be available through the Vail area from East Vail all the way downvalley into West Vail. While not ski-in/ski-out close, with the free Town of Vail bus system, you generally will have a very short walk to a busstop which will go to the Vail Transportation Center. Then it's only a short walk down the steps and across the Covered Bridge and another couple of blocks and you're at the base of the mountain and your first ride up the hill. If that short walk is too daunting for you because of the altitude ... I'd be very concerned about being able to ski at the much higher slopes above town.

Probably what would make more sense if you want to do that is Eagle, 30 minutes to the west down in the high desert on i-70. There is a comfort inn and a few other chains there.
|
I'd reccommed Eagle too. The highway usually stays clear and you won't have all the traffic to deal with like you do from Silverton etc...
Don't go all the the way to Glenwood.
