Lodging near Vail
Is there any lodging near Vail that is under $100 a night? I don't care if it is fleabag, cause I won't be there very long. I am taking a PSIA clinic in early January there, and I have to stay somewhere for 2 nights. I am willing to drive about an hour. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

In Vail, one of the cheapest is Roost Lodge.
Maybe the Holiday Inn at Vail.
Google them for deals and with your dates!!

O.k. I also see some cheap lodging in Silverthorne. How far of a drive is that from Vail?

It's about 32 miles. Should be about 35 minutes (in good weather!)
Dillon and Frisco are right there along I70....worth a look see!

As long as the weather is good and you don't mind driving over Vail Pass it is about 30 minutes. There are a number of cheaper chain hotels there.
Probably what would make more sense if you want to do that is Eagle, 30 minutes to the west down in the high desert on i-70. There is a comfort inn and a few other chains there.

I thought before I left Vail last year they remodeled the rooms, but I could be wrong.
Also for anyone that goes to Vail, check the Vail and Beaver Creek websites for specials especially in January as some great deals do come up. I suspect this winter is going to be like the winter of 2001-2002 and business will be bad or much worse. I think there will be some competitive rates this year.

I've stayed at the Comfort Inn in Eagle (about 30 min past Vail). It is actually pretty nice and cheaper than similar alternatives in summit county or Vail. It may still be a little above the price you are looking for, but you could maybe find something else a little cheaper in Eagle that is still reasonably nice. Being on the far side of Vail means that not much traffic from Denver is staying there, so the prices tend to be cheaper.

Glenwood Springs has lots of choices + the evening rate at the Hot Springs pool is cheap (er). They used to have cheap rooms with shared bath, but that was 25 yrs ago, I think they 'upgraded'... There should be a hostel in Glenwood or Carbondale.

Your best bet if you want to make reservations in advance will be "downvalley" ... West of Vail, where you're about 35-45 minutes away from Vail. The area is away from the Front Range skiiers who are on the East side from Vail ... at Copper, or Frisco, or Silverthorne. You'll have less traffic heading East to Vail than the prevailing traffic heading West to all the ski areas in the AM, or back down the hill Eastward in the PM. It's also an easier drive because you're coming from lower elevation drier country up to Vail, instead of over the passes with a lot of snow and traffic.
So, Eagle is certainly a possibility for your stay, but that's about as far West as I'd want to be from Vail.
If you can wait until the last minute for your lodging, then there's a couple of websites that list last minute Vail area lodging deals. Some are real "steals", some still are pretty expensive. You might also want to check out folks letting their "timeshare" units go for cheap, especially in the West Vail area for a few nights; again, there's some websites that have these deals listed.
My Vail property manager tells me that advance reservations are lagging this year from last year, but it's still pretty early. Some property owners/managers are already thinking about giving some pretty good discounts to get bookings. I think skiers are becoming more value oriented these days and want the best possible combination of skiing and destination amenities. So they are waiting to see what kind of ski season it's shaping up to be. If Vail has snow ... and other major resort areas do not, as has happened in some recent ski seasons ... Vail will be at a premium price again and worth it. If Vail doesn't have great snow and other places have excellent conditions, then it may be a "soft" sales year for Vail and bargains will be available. There's still time to see how the season is shaping up .... Utah's been getting some awesome early season snow while Colorado lags at this point.
