Just hope that some unemployed sheetrocker doesn't steal your gun and go on to commit some violent act while he's tweaking on meth...'cuz if he gets caught they will trace the gun back to whoever it's registered to, whether it be in MI or CO. If the firearm isn't registered, then it's less of a hassle.

That's utter BS.
There is no "registration". There is a form 4473 which you have to fill out from a FFL dealer.
The 4473 IS NOT a defacto registration.

I used to hold an 01 FFL and still hold an 03 FFL (Curio and Relic license). There is no Federal data base. To trace your weapon, they have to go back to the selling FFL.

Pilot is correct. That being said, if I was ordered to turn in my guns, I would comply, like the good little law abiding citizen I am, and then within an hour, I'd either be making my own gun, or hitting the streets to find an unregistered weapon.
I refuse to be without any protection for myself.
Guns are for 3 things (to quote Homer Simpson)
1. Hunting
2. Killing Stuff
3. And keeping the King of England out of your face.

So being that I am from Illinois with a FOID card and all weapons registered and proofs of purchase I should be more than good to go as far as moving I assume.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the 4473 process sure makes it sound formal. The caveat is that the info is only available when an FFL holder retires their license. That little detail wasn't familiar to me, so I stand corrected. I remain skeptical that this won't change with our illustrious new leader and an anti-gun agenda...
The Form 4473 contains name, address, date of birth, government-issued photo ID, National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background check transaction number, make/model/serial number of the firearm, and a short federal affidavit stating that the purchaser is eligible to purchase firearms under federal law. Lying on this form is a felony and can be punished by up to five years in prison in addition to fines, even if the transaction is simply denied by the NICS.[ citation needed]
The dealer also records all information from the Form 4473 into their "bound-book". A dealer must keep this log the entire time they are in business and is required to surrender the log to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) upon retirement from the firearms business. The ATF is allowed to inspect, as well as request a copy of the Form 4473 from the dealer during the course of a criminal investigation

True, but form 4473 does not apply to private sales. You do not have to do a NICS background check when buying from an individual or at a gun show.

Hmmm. Unfortunately, all my guns were lost in a tragic boating accident.

True, but if you buy from a dealer at a gun show which is most of the sales, you're going to go through the background check and fill out the 4473.

THe key word is DEALER. Most of the people at a gun show are private individuals.

Pay only with cash for your guns from an individual and ammo from a store and you'll have no paper trail to contend with. Simple.
