Default Aspen is a little of both.

Aspen has some great things about it and some annoying things.

Good=Cool Local People
Bad=Ego trickle down

Good=Skiing, some of the best
Bad=lift ticket prices

Good=Beautiful, and Sunny
Bad=.......

Good=Alot of great restaurants
Bad=Alot of very expensive restaurants

Lance Armstrong recently purchased a spread in Aspen. Good area for training, high altitude good for athletes, he wanted an escape from the heat of Austin, great place to bring the little kids and focus on the family....

Yeah...Aspen...Lance Armstrong, the guy who's water/gardening bill is 10x the total of all the bill's you've got including your mortgage if you have one!

There's a reason why Aspen is probably the most expensive city in America. How many places combine the best of amazingly beautiful wilderness, great skiing, and the same level of culture you'd get in Manhattan. You can go to great restaurants, foreign films, world class music festivals, stores you would find in Paris or London, 100+ bars and five minutes away you can be completely away from it skiing or hiking or mountain biking. I was a ski bum there and I loved it. And, no, I didn't work 3 jobs or live 40 miles away. You can pull it off it you really want to. It is nothing like the other cities you mentioned so I'm not sure what you're looking for but it's an amazing place.

A friend of mine took his 100 year-old grandmother to Aspen a few years ago and they visited her childhood home, a nice little Victorian cottage. The owners invited them in to see the place. Guess what they paid for it? $4.5 million.
