Monument is definitely a nasty area when it comes to heavy snowfall/localized climate events.

I've spent way too many hours of my life on the ground trying to drive over that area on an otherwise reasonable winter day of transit between Denver and CSprings.

Come to think of it, I've also spent many a VFR flight coming along the Front Range to/from APA where I had to divert to the east many miles to lower terrain before getting into clear weather from the "cell" that just seemed to hang around the ridge. That was not only during the winter months, but during other times of the year, too. And the only place I've ever gotten hailed on during VFR clear skies on a summer day .... thankfully, no hail dents to the plane, but it sure was intimidating due to the noise and thinking my bird was about to be totalled before I could turn away and exit the cell, landing at COS to be sure that there wasn't any damage.

My experiences are anecdotal ... but considering how many times I've been in severe weather in this area, I'd rate it as serious snow country.

There are climate sites that give the median high, median low, and median median ranges of temps and precipitation. That way you can (sort of) screen out what you really can't live with. It's surprising how much variation there is in our "temperate" country, and our state.
