In the imperfect
Summit County has a lot of positives and in many respects could be considered one of the best places to live in Colorado, this nation, or world. However issues others have spoken of here are all realities you will have to contend with. So a question of priorities and how you balance it all.
Desirable because it is an affluent area and due the resorts more first class services than one might otherwise find in a relatively isolated region. Lots to do, particularly if you enjoy outdoor sports. Besides local services, also relatively easy and quick access to Denver, CO and other large front range towns. A beautiful mountain setting with lovely views in every direction. A generally agreeable ambience, most everyone looking to get along and just have a good time. Probably a different mindset from Maine, which you may or not welcome. If well situated you might consider yourself fortunate to live there.
But you'll likely have to work at it. Housing is expensive and people you might expect to live locally, such as firemen, often commute from such places as Leadville, CO, someplace where they can actually afford a home. The economy is highly dependent on tourism, which is likely to be significantly impacted by the present national financial situation. One might also consider the natural beauty of the area which is being severely impacted by the Mountain Pine Beetle. The abnormal spread of this otherwise native beetle will result in the near total loss of the predominant tree of this region, the lodgepole pine. Hard to fathom unless seen in person, even then, but this alone will markedly change the environment for decades, if not centuries to come. Aside from the altered vista, probably also forest fires in the short term, flooding, river degradation, and water issues.
In other words, if looking for paradise you might as well travel the world for that never quite found. But in the imperfect Summit County might do nicely.
