Doesn't Hwy 85 run along the west side of it? I end up in Cheyenne for work every once in a while, and decided to come home that way one time. Thought I remember seeing "grassland" signs.

US 85 likely does run along the western edge of the Pawnee National Grassland, but the buttes themselves are about 30-40 miles east of there.

Oops! Wrong place for this one.

Well while I'm here, does anyone know the exact little town that the series Centennial was based on? Someone I know from Nebraska brought it up in conversation and the towns I listed did not ring a bell with him.

According to Wikipedia, Centennial is loosely based on Greeley but incorporates historical events from all over the Eastern Plains.

Not too surprised Michener chose Greeley considering the fact that he was a UNC alum and former faculty member and he donated his entire collection to the UNC Library that bears his name.

Like I said here, I know exactly where the Sand Creek Massacre took place as I used to go there every two weeks. It's near Chivington Colorado.

Default Hitting the road today

I'll be trying to shoot the buttes around sunset tonight - thought I'd scout a bit and found this forum. I've enjoyed looking around!

I wanted to mention to "vegaswanderer" that if you make the trip to Bent's Fort, you might want to see the other buttes down there - Two Buttes between Lamar and Springfield.http://farm1.static.flickr.com/52/18...402afd32ed.jpg

Someone's raising African animals just west of Bent's Fort, there are what seems like a million birds of every imaginable stripe down there during migration... great stuff if you like that kind of thing.

That's not Colorado! That's every other planet that Captain Kirk ever fought someone in hand-to-hand combat on!

Awesome pics

Now you have done it! Let out my little secret. Just kidding. I love the area, more than the mountains. It is like a sea that seems to go on forever, only you can walk and drive on it. (Don't forget the badgers and rattlesnakes.) It is so quiet there.
