Humblebee! Whazzup? Been off the board a few days while visiting friends!

Cosmic Wizard, Jazzlover, and McGowdog have covered the bases pretty well on this subject. FWIW I'll add a few comments.

As pointed out by Cosmic, St. Mary's Hospital has been expanding A LOT, 50% sounds about right. I'm on disability so I've been to St. Mary's frequently for various procedures. Fortunately I've been lucky as the care has been first rate. Administration has been good to me as I'm on Medicare, with no other patient provider, so when I have gotten behind, they have been good to me regarding payments.

Regarding specialists on procedures, GJ has gotten better recruiting them for practice here, but as Jazzlover points out they have a ways to go. The Grand Junction area is only maybe a third the size of where you are from (Boise), so you will have to go to Denver or Salt Lake for the less common things. With me, the specialists I have seen are skin doctors, orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, and an otarynologist. All have been very capable people.

One note on that though. Medicare is not enough anymore, especially with young practioners just setting up their practice. It took me a while to find a clinic who would take it, and that was 9 years ago. For the indigent, they have a capable clinic that serves the Grand Valley- the Marallac Clinic, set up for the uninsured and poor. They have a dental division as well.

Will post later tonight and tomorrow on other ?s. Hope this helps and welcome to the western slope!

Just got the upgrade yesterday... and it's like... it's like that We're outta the Woods commercial!

Everything is in color now! And there's bunnies and music all over!

I can watch a Youtube video without hitting pause, going into the kitchen and making dinner or putting away dishes from the dishwasher, then coming back and forgetting what I was going to do!

It's at least 5 times faster!

It's like I wonder why we ordered "slow internet" in the first place.

Now this is DSL over phone line. It's better than dial-up because the Cat-3 uses all four of the twisted wire pairs or something.

Now I'm going to get a promotion at work! I'm gonna get the RED stapler now!

A quick note about the weather from MHO. This part of Colorado gets socked in with cold weather and an inversion is settled in here but good. This winter and last winter have been pretty snowy. Today's high is only 26. It will be that way for a while longer.

I will take this cold over Colorado's front range any day. I have lived all over the state as I worked construction from Durango to Brush, and from Craig to Lamar. While living on the front range, I spent too many mornings busting windshield scrapers cleaning snow off my vehicles in April. And May! Silverton, 125 south of here on hwy 550, has 5 feet of snow sitting in peoples yardsas I'm posting this. That is nothing, last winter it peaked at 9 feet!

Having said all that, there is still one thing to keep in mind. We are still in a drought cycle. It was only 7 years ago fires scorched the hell out of this state. The western slope got it as well. One small wildfire caught a spot of the west side of the Grand Mesa. That weekend was the Palisade Peach Festival and it was eery looking at the fire basically going for 2 to 3 days. Palisade is 12 miles east of GJ, and the mesa sits above it. Wasn't a pretty site and you could see the fire clearly from where the festival was held downtown.

Drat! I hate it when I create a lengthy post only to submit it and realize I'm not logged in, losing everything. I was really poetic too. It was pulitzer prize material... honestly!

I'll try to remember what I said...

Oh yeah, Boise is definitely like GJ weather-wise. We get the inversion layers that hang around for days/weeks, and we get very little snow compared to the rest of the state. We managed to have a white Christmas, but it has since rained and the white stuff is pretty much gone. We also have a lot of wildfires due to hot summers and the drought conditions.

I'm still going to need to spend some time there to really get a feel for things. Boise has so much to offer as far as cultural events like the theatre, ballet, symphony, etc. Although, I could easily just travel to my sister's near Denver and get my fix there. Besides, as I said before, we're pretty low maintenance.

I have one more question, if you'll indulge me. Are there a fair amount of non-denominational churches in the area? I've done a search on that as well, and can't seem to get a consistent list. If anyone has a link, that would be helpful too.

Thanks so much for being such a welcoming bunch, and for providing honest answers to my questions. I don't mind the negative stuff because I prefer to go into this with my eyes wide open.

It is utterly demoralizing and heartbreaking when somethnig like that happens. Especially on my home PC, I can be typing along and hit the wrong key and everything disappears. Poof! Gone! Lost in cyberspace forever! And it's always a long post. Always the pulitzer prize stuff that gets lost. It takes my utmost effort to re-engineer it, and sometimes I just give it up. The heck with it. It wasn't meant to be.

It's been almost two months since I've posted here, but the job prospect in GJ was kind of in limbo. Recently, however, things are starting to move along and we will be making a trip over to check out the area.

Given that we will only have a few days available to explore the area, what parts do you recommend we look to get a true feel for the place? So far, we have decided to look around Fruita, and take a drive through the national park as well. Are there any housing areas that are a must-see in GJ specifically? We prefer to stay fairly close to town to make sure there is no longer than a 30 minute commute time for dh.

Thanks once again for everyone's help.

I don't think there is a place in the valley that is more than 30 minuted to the center of town.

I'd look into the following areas:

Palisade
Grand Junction North
Redlands

Good luck.
