Not quite as isolated (if driving north out of Ouray) and a bit bigger. Huge amounts of snow, bitter cold too. More to do there.

The trick is finding a job. If I could work there, I'd move there in a second. It's my favorite Colorado mountain town ... and I think it's the quintessential mountain town.

Ouray is not far from Ridgway, another small town, and within striking distance of Montrose (bigger town).

If you're into ice climbing, mountain climbing, 4x4ing, etc., Ouray would be your dream town. But if you're not into winter activities or living in a town with much less than 1,000 people, you might get cabin fever.

Gorgeous spot--very few jobs. Real estate hideously overpriced if you have to make a living there. Spectacular as it is, Ouray sits at the bottom of a box canyon. Many parts of town only get a very few hours of direct sunlight per day during the winter. A co-worker who lived there for years finally got tired of that and moved--that and the work he did related to the silver mines in the area dried up when the silver market crashed in 1980.

To answer your next potential question (Telluride), the same goes for there, and it's even more ridiculously priced...

Southwest Colorado = Cold!! Awesome four-wheeling though!! (in the summer). Jobs in any small mountain town will be rough, unless its a resort town. Of course you won't be able to afford to live in a resort town if you work there.
